Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has defended his players after their struggles in front of goal, insisting that criticism should not overshadow the progress the team is making.
The Soweto giants have missed a host of opportunities in their last two Betway Premiership matches, frustrating supporters eager to see the team climb the table. But Ben Youssef says the players should not be judged too harshly for their lack of composure.
Backing His Squad
“The boys are creating chances, which is already a positive sign,” the Tunisian tactician explained. “Scoring goals often comes down to confidence, timing and sometimes even luck. We can’t simply blame them for missing. They’re putting in the work at training, and sooner or later it will show in games.”
Ben Youssef added that Chiefs’ attackers and midfielders have been working tirelessly on their decision-making in the final third. “It’s not just about strikers the whole team contributes to our attacking play. We’re happy with the way they are pushing forward and believe the goals will come.”
On Penalty Takers
The assistant coach also addressed the issue of penalties, after the team’s recent struggles from the spot. Chiefs, who have missed key chances from 12 yards this season, remain confident in their designated takers.
“We have players assigned to that role, and they practise consistently in training,” he said. “Even the best in the world miss penalties. What matters is that they continue to have the confidence to step up. We as coaches back them completely.”
Protecting Confidence
Ben Youssef believes one of his responsibilities is shielding players from excessive criticism, which can affect their confidence. “Supporters must understand these are young men under pressure. If we keep pointing fingers, we’ll only break them down. Our job is to build them up so they can deliver.”
Kaizer Chiefs Looking Ahead
Despite the frustrations in front of goal, Chiefs remain competitive in the league and are still within reach of the top spots. For Ben Youssef, patience is the key.
“The team is creating, dominating and playing with intensity,” he concluded. “Once the finishing touch arrives, the results will follow. We’re confident the goals will come, and when they do, it will change everything for us.”
