As Hugo Broos gears up to lead Bafana Bafana into the final stretch of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, South Africa’s hopes are delicately poised. The national team finds itself just two matches away from securing their third automatic World Cup berth, and the pressure is on.

Contents
  • The Crucial Final Matches
  • 1. Mohau Nkota
  • 2. Iqraam Rayners
  • 3. Oswin Appollis
  • 4. Mbekezeli Mbokazi
  • 5. Ronwen Williams

Currently sitting in second place in Group C with 14 points, Bafana are level with leaders Benin, who edge them only on goal difference. The path to the World Cup now hinges on the outcomes of their final two fixtures against Zimbabwe and Rwanda. With their fate in their hands, Broos will be relying on key players to ensure a successful end to the campaign.

The Crucial Final Matches

Bafana Bafana’s qualification hopes rest on the upcoming clashes with Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium and Rwanda in Mbombela. These back-to-back encounters will decide whether South Africa secures its place at the World Cup. Ahead of these vital games, let’s take a closer look at five players who could be pivotal in determining Bafana’s destiny.

1. Mohau Nkota

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Mohau Nkota has been a revelation for Bafana Bafana. His standout performance against Nigeria highlighted his sharp pace and knack for creating goal-scoring opportunities, which were key to South Africa’s opening goal. Nkota’s creativity and dynamism make him a real asset in unlocking tight defences, and his inclusion in the starting lineup could provide the spark Bafana need.

2. Iqraam Rayners

The Mamelodi Sundowns striker is in the form of his life, scoring nine goals in just 11 appearances across all competitions this season. Although Rayners has had to settle for cameo appearances in recent national team fixtures, his current form is undeniable. With the competition for places up front, including Burnley’s Lyle Foster, Broos will have to make a tough call on who leads the line for Bafana. Rayners’ hot streak makes him a compelling option.

3. Oswin Appollis

Appollis has emerged as one of Broos’ trusted players, with the Orlando Pirates winger showing consistency in his performances. Since joining the Buccaneers, Appollis has been instrumental in helping his side to five consecutive victories. No longer the talisman of Polokwane City, he’s thriving at Pirates, surrounded by quality teammates. His newfound confidence could prove invaluable for Bafana in these crucial World Cup qualifiers.

4. Mbekezeli Mbokazi

At just 20 years old, Orlando Pirates centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi has become one of the standout young players of the season. His impressive performances, including a Player of the Match display against Nigeria, have made him a feature in Bafana’s defensive setup. Despite the return of Nkosinathi Sibisi from injury, Mbokazi’s ability to remain calm under pressure and his commanding displays make him a strong candidate for a starting spot in the upcoming qualifiers.

5. Ronwen Williams

As Bafana Bafana’s captain and the heart of their defence, Ronwen Williams’ experience and leadership will be vital in the final stages of qualification. The Sundowns goalkeeper has been instrumental in keeping South Africa’s defence solid, with only six goals conceded during his time in goal.

However, FIFA’s ruling that handed South Africa a 3-0 loss for fielding Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho while on two yellow cards means the official tally stands at nine goals conceded. Williams’ ability to stay calm under pressure and organise the backline will be crucial in these make-or-break matches.

With Bafana Bafana’s World Cup qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the importance of these five players cannot be overstated. Whether it’s Nkota’s creativity, Rayners’ clinical finishing, Appollis’ form, Mbokazi’s composure, or Williams’ leadership, each of them will play a pivotal role in South Africa’s pursuit of a spot in FIFA World Cup 2026.
