Andile Mpisane, the former Royal AM chairman, footballer and well-known entertainer, is reportedly preparing to revive his career on foreign soil. The 24-year-old son of Durban businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize has been spotted training with Mbabane Highlanders AM ahead of the new season in Eswatini.
According to Eswatini Daily News, Mpisane has been taking part in full sessions with the squad, sparking talk of a sensational football comeback. This development comes nearly a year after his last appearance for Royal AM, who were removed from the South African Premiership in December 2023.
From Royal AM’s Collapse to Eswatini Ambitions
Royal AM’s downfall earlier this year marked a turning point in Mpisane’s football journey. The club was expelled from the domestic league after being placed under curatorship to recover an outstanding R40 million tax bill linked to its owner, Shauwn Mkhize.
In the aftermath, Mkhize quickly made her mark in Eswatini football by acquiring Mbabane Highlanders. She later rebranded the side as Mbabane Highlanders AM, adding her son’s initials to the club name. At the time, it was widely believed that Andile would only serve in an administrative capacity rather than return to the field.
Mkhize herself told Metro FM earlier this year that her son was transitioning into management. “He already experienced playing in the elite league and I think he now enjoys the business and leadership side of football,” she explained.

Despite his passion for football, Mpisane’s performances at Royal AM often drew mixed reviews. One of his most memorable appearances came against Kaizer Chiefs last season. Starting the game, he struggled against Amakhosi’s high tempo as Chiefs took a 2–0 lead before half-time.
Mpisane was substituted at the break, and his team rallied back to secure a 2–2 draw. That outing, however, would be his last significant contribution as a starter. He did not feature regularly again before the club’s removal from the Premiership.
These struggles fuelled criticism that his presence in the squad was more symbolic than earned on football merit. Yet, others have defended him, arguing that he needed more time and consistent opportunities to prove his potential.
