Reports can reveal that Neo Maema’s anticipated transfer to Kaizer Chiefs fell through before he finalised a move to Tanzanian side Simba SC. The 29-year-old attacking midfielder, who was highly admired by Amakhosi, was in contention for a switch, but the deal ultimately did not materialise.
Sundowns’ Reluctance to Strengthen Rivals
Sources indicate that Mamelodi Sundowns were hesitant to sell Maema to one of their domestic rivals. While the financial terms of a potential permanent transfer remain undisclosed, the reluctance mirrors a common practice in top leagues worldwide, where leading clubs avoid directly strengthening competitors.
A source close to the player confirmed:
“Chiefs were definitely interested, but Sundowns felt it was better for him to move abroad rather than bolster a local rival.”
Interest in Neo Maema Was Not New
Kaizer Chiefs had previously expressed interest in Maema, even making inquiries as early as January. However, at that time, Sundowns were unwilling to part with him as they still viewed him as a key option for their multiple competitions.
After struggling for regular minutes last season, Maema opted for a loan move to Simba SC, hoping a fresh environment would help him regain form and consistency. The former Bloemfontein Celtic star enjoyed a decorated four-year spell at Sundowns, winning four league titles, the Nedbank Cup, MTN8, and the inaugural African Football League.
Will Kaizer Chiefs Renew Interest?
It remains to be seen if Kaizer Chiefs will pursue Maema once his stint in East Africa concludes. For now, the midfielder is focused on revitalizing his career at Simba SC, where regular game time could restore the attacking spark that once made him one of South Africa’s most exciting talents.
