The Pretoria High School Club Shooting on 21 September 2025 left the local community shaken. The incident occurred at the Pretoria High School Old Boys’ Club during a cricket match. Four armed suspects attempted to steal two high-end vehicles from the parking lot. Within minutes, the attempted car theft escalated into a gunfight that left one suspect dead and another critically injured.

How the Pretoria High School Club Shooting Unfolded

According to reports, the suspects targeted a Toyota Land Cruiser and a Toyota Fortuner. The chaos began just before 11:30, when a community responder interrupted the suspects.

Jarad Frimmel, spokesperson for the Old East Safety Forum, explained:

“Our volunteer community responder was the first to arrive at the scene… A shootout ensued when the suspects were interrupted.”

During the exchange, one suspect was fatally shot. Another was treated by emergency responders and transported under police guard. A third suspect was detained by bystanders, while the fourth fled and remains at large.

Parents and Children Ordered to the Ground

The gunfire erupted while families were gathered for a cricket match. Parents and children were instructed to lie flat on the sports field for safety. This swift action prevented civilian casualties.

Community members reported being traumatised but grateful that no bystanders were harmed. Emergency services, including Emer-G-Med and Pretoria Volunteer Emergency Services, responded within minutes to stabilise the situation.

Club Reassures Community After Pretoria High School Club Shooting

Kyriacos Flouditoits, chairman of the Old Boys’ Club, issued a statement to calm public concerns:

“We want to assure our community that this was an isolated incident involving an attempted vehicle theft… We are reviewing our security protocols in consultation with professional security advisors.”

Normal club operations resumed shortly after the incident, but with heightened security measures. The reassurance highlights the club’s commitment to safety while investigations continue.

Pretoria’s Rising Car Theft and Violent Crime Rates

This incident reflects a broader trend in Gauteng. Vehicle hijackings and theft remain high across the province. Official statistics from the South African Police Service (SAPS) show that carjackings increased by 7.7% in 2024/25 compared to the previous year.

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS Africa) notes that syndicates often target luxury vehicles such as SUVs. The attempted theft of a Land Cruiser and Fortuner fits this established pattern.

Community Response Highlights the Power of Collaboration

One remarkable element of the Pretoria High School Club Shooting was the role of community responders. Quick-thinking bystanders detained a suspect before police arrived.

Frimmel commended the cooperation between civilians, private security, and medical teams. He noted that this collective action likely prevented further loss of life.

The incident underscores the importance of community safety forums in Gauteng. Many neighbourhoods rely on volunteer responders to bridge gaps in police resources.

Safety Lessons for Pretoria Residents

The Pretoria High School Club Shooting demonstrates that crime can erupt in seemingly safe environments. Residents should remain alert when attending public events. Vehicle owners are also urged to invest in tracking devices and anti-theft technology.

SAPS continues to advise citizens to avoid confrontation with armed criminals whenever possible. Reporting suspicious activity to local safety forums or security companies remains essential.

The Pretoria High School Club Shooting was a chilling reminder of the persistent crime challenges in Gauteng. One suspect is dead, another is injured, and a third is in custody. Fortunately, no civilians were harmed, thanks to the swift actions of community responders and emergency personnel.

As SAPS investigates, the Old Boys’ Club has pledged to strengthen its security. For Pretoria residents, the incident reinforces the urgent need for vigilance and coordinated community action against organised crime
