Renewing your South African driving licence card is an important step in keeping your documents up to date. While the expiry of the card does not mean your actual driving licence is invalid, the card serves as official proof that you hold a valid licence. If your card has expired, is about to expire, or has been lost or stolen, here’s what you need to know about the renewal or replacement process.
Key Things to Know Before You Renew
- When your driving licence card expires, your driving licence itself remains valid. Only the physical card that proves you are licensed needs to be renewed.
- You do not need to retake a driving test when renewing your card.
- The process for a lost or stolen licence card is the same as for a renewal.
Step 1: Documents You Need
When applying at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) within South Africa, you must bring:
- A completed DL1 application form
- Your original South African ID and a certified copy
- Four recent ID-size photos (same format as required for ID documents)
- The prescribed card issuing fee
Step 2: Submitting Your Application
- Applications must be submitted in person at your nearest DLTC.
- Your new card will usually be ready for collection within six weeks.
- If you apply within two months of your card’s expiry, the expiry date is automatically extended by three months.
- If your card has already expired, you will also need to apply for a temporary driving licence to use while you wait for the new card.
Step 3: Collecting Your New Licence Card
You can collect your licence in person, but if you cannot, someone else may do so on your behalf. For this, you must provide:
- A certified copy of their ID document
- An affidavit explaining why you cannot collect the card yourself, including the collector’s details (full name and ID number)
If unforeseen circumstances prevent you from collecting it, the nominated person must submit:
- Their own ID and certified copy
- A certified copy of your ID
- An affidavit from you explaining the situation and naming them as the collector
Renewals for South Africans Abroad
If you are living outside South Africa, you will still need to apply in person when visiting, as new fingerprints, photos, a signature, and an eye test are required.
You can nominate a relative or another person to collect your card once it is issued, but you must:
- Notify the DLTC at the time of your application
- Follow the same collection procedure outlined above
In the meantime, you can also apply for a temporary driving licence.
What If You Cannot Return to South Africa?
If your driving licence card has expired, been lost, or stolen, and you are unable to return to South Africa, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) can assist.
- They can issue a confirmation letter if you hold a valid licence on the eNaTIS system.
- This letter is not a driving licence, but it serves as proof that you are licensed and allows you to convert your licence to a foreign driving licence in your current country of residence.
- To request this letter, include your RSA ID number and your postal address in the application.
Renewing or replacing your South African driving licence card is a straightforward process, whether you’re in the country or abroad.
