Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the Betway Premiership season on Tuesday night, going down 3-1 to an impressive Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium. The result brought Amakhosi’s unbeaten start to a halt and handed Sekhukhune three crucial points to reclaim top spot on the league table.
Chiefs were rocked early on when Bradley Grobler broke the deadlock just five minutes into the clash. However, they responded swiftly as Flavio Silva levelled the scores in the 13th minute, giving home fans hope of a comeback. Both sides created chances, but the match went into half-time locked at 1-1.
Sekhukhune’s Second-Half Masterclass
Just as they did in the opening half, Sekhukhune struck early after the restart. Grobler once again found space in the box to restore the visitors’ lead. Minutes later, Thabang Monare delivered the killer blow, making it 3-1 and leaving Chiefs with an uphill battle.
Despite the scoreline, Chiefs dominated possession, controlling 64% of the ball and attempting 16 shots compared to Sekhukhune’s six. They also strung together over 500 passes, almost double their opponents’ tally. Yet, defensive lapses and poor decision-making proved costly.
Nabi Reflects on Costly Mistakes
Head coach Nasreddine Nabi admitted that his side contributed to their own downfall.
“We made a lot of mistakes that led to goals,” said Nabi. “Sekhukhune caused us problems in transition and with long balls we couldn’t deal with. Even though we created chances, we were not clinical enough to take control of the game.”
Nabi emphasised there was no reason for panic but called for immediate improvement. “Accidents happen, but what we need to see now is a reaction. We must learn from this and be ready for the next challenge.”
Sekhukhune Regain Top Spot
The victory propelled Sekhukhune United back to the summit of the Premiership with 16 points from six games, remaining unbeaten with five wins and a draw. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns trail them by two points in second place, while Chiefs stay third with 13 points.
Eric Tinkler’s side have now made a serious statement of intent, showing they can challenge the traditional giants of the league this season.
Kaizer Chiefs Turn Focus to Continental Clash
Chiefs have little time to dwell on the loss as they prepare to travel to Angola to face Kabuscorp in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie on Saturday. Nabi believes the match presents the perfect opportunity for his players to respond.
“We need a different approach for the continental competition,” he said. “It’s a knockout tie, and we need to show more conviction and focus.”
Amakhosi Fans Expect a Strong Response
While the FNB crowd was left disappointed, there is still a sense of optimism that this setback could sharpen Chiefs’ resolve going forward. Supporters will be eager to see how Amakhosi bounce back in Angola as they aim to progress on the continental stage and keep their domestic title hopes alive.
