Gauteng’s Ongoing Safety Challenges
Gauteng remains one of South Africa’s most crime-affected provinces. According to Crime Stats, it records thousands of violent crimes each quarter. Officers face risks from armed criminals and road hazards every day.
Commissioner Mthombeni’s Tribute to the Fallen
Lieutenant General Mthombeni shared heartfelt words at the ceremony. “These brave men and women in blue did not flee when faced with danger. They defended the defenceless and honoured their oath,” he said.
He also acknowledged the youngest of the fallen, Sergeant Ntila, noting her nearly 20 years of future service lost.
National Context: SAPS Commemoration Across South Africa
This Gauteng tribute follows the national SAPS Commemoration Day held on 7 September 2025. There, 27 officers were remembered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile stated, “Attacking a police officer is an attack on the State itself.” He called for stricter laws, echoing the 2024 changes to the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
SAPSET: Supporting the Families Left Behind
The SAPS Education Trust (SAPSET) was highlighted during the ceremony. Established in 2008, SAPSET provides bursaries, counselling, and school fees for children of fallen officers.
Commissioner Mthombeni pledged continued support, referencing recent fundraising efforts that raised R700,000. Over 500 Gauteng children have benefited since inception. Learn more.
