The Fatal Crash That Claimed Five Lives
The crash occurred on the N1 near Mokopane, Limpopo, involving two sedans that collided head-on before catching fire. According to Tidimalo Chuene, spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, four of the victims were burnt beyond recognition.
“Two sedans collided head-on before catching fire,” Chuene said.
DJ Poizen, whose real name was Calvin Masetla, died in the collision. Tributes for the Tzaneen-born artist poured in from fans, fellow DJs, and music organisations.
Memorial Services and Fundraising for DJ Poizen
Poizen’s family has announced two memorial services:
- 11 September at Centurion Shisanyama (Gauteng), 4PM – 6PM
- 12 September at Napscom Hall (Limpopo), 2PM – 5PM
Due to financial constraints, the family issued a public appeal for support:
“We are operating under a zero budget… Please assist with donations to help us lay him to rest with dignity,” said family spokesperson Robert Masetla via Daily Sun.
Road Safety Concerns in Limpopo
The stretch of road where the crash occurred has a notorious reputation. According to provincial officials, accidents on the Ysterberg Mountain route are common, especially in low-visibility conditions.
MEC Violet Mathye of Limpopo Transport said:
“I am deeply concerned about the rise in crashes along this route, especially during the early morning hours.”
The government continues to urge motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and avoid reckless overtaking.
Mental Health and Support for Survivors
Surviving such a traumatic event brings emotional challenges. Mental health experts, like Paula Quinsee, advise survivors and families to seek support.
“Survivor’s guilt is common after fatal accidents. Therapy and support groups can help process the grief,” said Quinsee.
Music Industry Reaction and Event Postponement
Chymamusique was scheduled to host the Ecue Men’s Camp in Clarens this September. Due to his injuries, the event has been postponed indefinitely.
“This camp is more than a getaway. It’s a healing space for men,” Chymamusique previously stated .
Artists like Dwson and Groove Cartel SA have paid tribute to both musicians. They praised Chymamusique’s resilience and honoured Poizen’s legacy in shaping South Africa’s dance music culture.
