Radio personality Sol Phenduka has officially been dismissed from Kaya FM after weeks of speculation surrounding his suspension. The broadcaster confirmed the decision on 1 September 2025, stating that Phenduka’s conduct on an external platform had breached the station’s values and contractual obligations.

This development follows growing controversy tied to comments made on the MacG podcast and a R2.5 million lawsuit filed by actress and businesswoman Minnie Dlamini.

Sol Phenduka’s Rise and Role at Kaya FM

Sol Phenduka joined Kaya FM in 2022, co-hosting the flagship breakfast show alongside Sizwe Dhlomo and Dineo Ranaka. Known for his sharp wit and outspoken personality, he quickly became a prominent voice in Gauteng radio.

However, his dual presence on Podcast and Chill with MacG often raised questions about balancing edgy commentary with mainstream broadcast responsibilities.

Suspension and Lawsuit Connection

On 20 August 2025, Kaya FM announced that Sol Phenduka had been suspended pending an internal process. At the time, the station said it was committed to “due process,” declining to reveal details.

Days later, Phenduka hinted on social media that his suspension was linked to legal action:

“You know what it’s about; it’s about the court case with Minnie,” he told followers .

Minnie Dlamini had filed a R2.5 million lawsuit, accusing Phenduka of defamation, harassment, hate speech, and gender-based discrimination after derogatory remarks were made about her on the MacG podcast.

Kaya FM’s Official Statement on the Firing

On 1 September 2025, Kaya FM’s Acting Managing Executive, Dave Tiltmann confirmed the termination:

“Kaya 959 cannot and will not condone comments made on the MacG vodcast. Misogynistic remarks about actress Minnie Dlamini were unacceptable and inconsistent with respect owed to women.”

Tiltmann further emphasised that Kaya FM’s foundations are trust, integrity, accountability, respect, and inclusivity, noting:

“When conduct falls short, we act decisively.”

The station highlighted that Phenduka had previously given written assurances in June 2023 that similar behaviour would not be repeated.

Public Reaction to Sol Phenduka’s Dismissal

The news has sparked mixed reactions across social media. Supporters argue that Kaya FM acted responsibly to uphold professional standards, while others feel Phenduka is being unfairly punished for comments made outside of the station.

Nevertheless, the dismissal underscores how high-profile media figures are increasingly held accountable for content across both traditional broadcasting and digital platforms.

Implications for Media Accountability

The dismissal of Sol Phenduka has broader implications for South Africa’s media landscape. With the rise of podcasts and vodcasts that often push boundaries, radio broadcasters are navigating new challenges around brand integrity and public accountability.

Experts suggest that this case could set a precedent for how local stations manage presenters who maintain influential platforms outside traditional radio.

What Happens Next?

While Kaya FM has moved on from Phenduka, the outcome of Minnie Dlamini’s lawsuit remains unresolved. If successful, it could reinforce the importance of responsible commentary and set stronger legal precedents around gender-based discrimination in South African media.

For now, the spotlight remains firmly on the balance between freedom of expression and the responsibility media figures carry in shaping public discourse.

The case of Sol Phenduka Has Been Fired by Kaya FM demonstrates the evolving pressures facing broadcasters in South Africa. By acting decisively, Kaya FM has reinforced its commitment to respect and accountability.

Whether Phenduka can rebuild his career may depend not only on public forgiveness but also on the legal outcomes tied to the lawsuit. What is clear is that South African audiences are increasingly demanding higher standards from those who influence the national conversation.
