Al Ahly have parted ways with José Riveiro, the former Orlando Pirates coach, just three months into his tenure in Cairo. The Egyptian giants confirmed on Sunday that the Spaniard’s contract had been terminated by mutual agreement after a string of disappointing results.
Riveiro, who left the Soweto club earlier this year, managed just one win in seven games with the reigning CAF Champions League holders. His final match in charge came on Saturday when Al Ahly suffered a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC, prompting the club to act swiftly before the international break.
Al Ahly’s Official Statement
In an official release, the club said:
“The club thanked Mr. José Ribeiro, the first football team’s technical director, and his assistant staff for the past period, and the contractual relationship was terminated by mutual consent.
This came after the Planning Committee’s meetings attended by Captain Mahmoud El Khatib, the club’s president, and Captain Mohamed Youssef, the sports director… The committee, in its meeting with José Riveiro, confirmed its appreciation for what he has provided since assuming responsibility, and that he has put in a lot of effort, but the results did not help to complete the experience.”
The statement further explained that discussions are ongoing to appoint a new technical team capable of meeting the club’s ambitions both domestically and continentally.
From “The Plumber” to a Trophy-Winner
When Riveiro first landed in South Africa in 2022, he was met with skepticism and was even nicknamed “The Plumber” due to his low-profile résumé, having largely served as an assistant coach abroad. However, he quickly silenced critics by steering Orlando Pirates to silverware.
During his spell with the Buccaneers, Riveiro captured two Nedbank Cups and three MTN 8 titles, cementing his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in recent PSL history.
Tough Times in Egypt
Despite his success in South Africa, Riveiro struggled to replicate the same magic in Egypt. With only a single win in seven matches, pressure mounted quickly at a club where expectations are sky-high. Al Ahly’s decision underscores their relentless pursuit of success, especially with continental competitions looming.
As the search begins for his successor, Al Ahly’s hierarchy will be hoping for a quick turnaround to keep the team on track to meet their ambitious goals.
