Reigning PSL Player of the Season, Lucas Ribeiro, has officially confirmed that he has terminated his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns, effective 1 August 2025. The Brazilian striker’s decision comes after months of tension with the Tshwane giants, following his impressive performance at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA in July.
Ribeiro’s standout displays on the global stage attracted significant interest from clubs abroad, but his ambition to leave Sundowns was met with resistance. The 26-year-old ultimately decided to exit camp just days before the start of the new season, citing a need for personal and professional stability.
Lucas Ribeiro Legal Battle Looms
In the wake of his contract termination, Ribeiro has referred the dispute to the FIFA Football Tribunal. The striker insists he acted within his rights and is seeking clarity on the consequences of leaving Sundowns.
“I believe I have just cause to terminate my contract with Mamelodi Sundowns FC, which I will explain before the FIFA Football Tribunal,” Ribeiro stated. “My next employer will not be involved in this dispute, neither financially nor from a disciplinary perspective.”
Ribeiro’s legal team has emphasised that the matter will be handled under FIFA’s regulations, ensuring the player’s future opportunities remain unaffected.
Personal Stability and Career Growth
One of the driving factors behind Ribeiro’s departure was his desire for long-term stability, particularly for his family. He criticised Sundowns for inflating his transfer price, making it impossible to secure a move abroad.
“The deal became impossible due to their unreasonable expectations. They inflated the transfer fee in a way that disregarded my career and personal situation,” Ribeiro explained. “My focus is on making decisions that will further my development as a footballer and provide long-term stability for my family.”
Despite speculation, Ribeiro has not disclosed the exact transfer amount Sundowns demanded, nor has he revealed which club he intends to join next.
European and Middle Eastern Interest
Ribeiro had reportedly been close to completing a move to Qatar SC in Qatar, but negotiations fell through after Sundowns allegedly raised the asking price repeatedly, ignoring the player’s personal and professional considerations. His representative, Jean-Louis Dupont, confirmed that the club’s approach left Ribeiro with no option but to protect his interests through legal channels, including the FIFA Tribunal and potentially other courts.
The Brazilian striker had previously led the PSL in scoring during the 2024–25 season, netting 16 goals in 27 games while providing nine assists. His exit marks a significant shift for Sundowns as they prepare for the second leg of their MTN8 semifinal against Orlando Pirates at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Tshwane.
Breakdown of Player-Club Relationship
Ribeiro’s relationship with Sundowns has reportedly deteriorated beyond repair. The striker emphasised that his priority now is to evaluate opportunities that align with both his career ambitions and family needs.
“I will now consider what is best for the future of my career to make the right choice—one that allows me to flourish as a sportsman while ensuring stability for my family,” Ribeiro said.
As the dispute unfolds, all eyes will remain on the FIFA Football Tribunal for the ruling, which could set a precedent for how international transfers and contract terminations are handled in cases involving inflated player valuations.
Ribeiro’s departure highlights ongoing debates within South African football regarding player autonomy, club demands, and the balance between career growth and contractual obligations.
