Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou admits the club’s supporters are far from embodying their famous ‘Happy People’ nickname at the moment and he’s on a mission to change that.
The Buccaneers entered the new season with high expectations, boosted by a promising start that saw them secure a place in the MTN8 semi-finals. But that early momentum has faded, with two consecutive defeats in their opening Betway Premiership fixtures leaving fans frustrated and Ouaddou under pressure to deliver results quickly.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final first-leg clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium, Ouaddou acknowledged the mood in the stands.
“I understand the frustrations of our fans. They are Happy People, and they love the club,” he said. “In every big football nation in Africa, when you start like this, you understand the disappointment. What we can promise is to bounce back, sweat for the shirt, represent the badge with pride, and bring them happiness. It’s only the beginning.”
Pressure Mounting on the New Boss
Part of the discontent comes from Ouaddou’s approach since replacing José Riveiro. While he had promised to build on Riveiro’s foundation, critics say his decisions have undone much of the squad’s previous cohesion.
The Morocco-born coach defended his selection strategy, explaining that his starting XI is chosen based on the demands of each specific opponent, rather than fixed combinations or star names.
“Every game is unique and has its own challenges,” he noted. “Some things haven’t gone well, but we’re here to work and improve. The players know how important it is to perform. We thought we’d bring joy to our supporters already, but we’ll still do that before the end of the season.”
Key Absences for Crucial Tie
Pirates will go into the Sundowns clash without several important players. Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa just a few goals away from the club’s all-time scoring record is training with the team but won’t feature in the match-day squad. Olisa Ndah, Makhehleni Makhaula, and Nkosinathi Sibisi have also been ruled out.
Ouaddou stressed that squad depth will be vital over the campaign.
“We have a big squad with very good players. Everyone will be important this season. There’s no bad reason for some players being out they’re training well, and their time will come. It’s important to keep players positive and confident so they can respond when called upon.”
The MTN8 semi-final against Sundowns offers Ouaddou not just a chance to silence critics, but to start turning ‘Happy People’ back into truly happy supporters.
