Mamelodi Sundowns’ start to the new Betway Premiership season has been less than smooth, and now the reigning champions are dealing with fresh off-field distractions just days before a crucial cup clash.
Esquivel’s Short-Lived Mamelodi Sundowns Journey
While player departures are common at the beginning of a season, the circumstances surrounding Matias Esquivel’s exit are raising eyebrows. The Argentine midfielder, brought in last year under former coach Rulani Mokwena, struggled for game time following the arrival of current head coach Miguel Cardoso.
In most cases, a new coach’s system may not suit certain players, but according to Cardoso, Esquivel’s playing style was not the issue.
Coach Questions Player’s Commitment
“Matias is a very good player, and he will succeed wherever he goes,” Cardoso told SABC Sport. “I also didn’t give him many opportunities, but at some point, Matias didn’t show perseverance or the willingness to fight for his place in the team.”
The comments cast doubt on the midfielder’s commitment, and reports now suggest he could be on his way to Greece.
High-Stakes Semi-Final Showdown
The timing of Cardoso’s remarks is notable, coming just days before Sundowns face Orlando Pirates in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.
Sundowns, currently sitting fifth on the Premiership log with a win and a draw from their opening two matches, are chasing a record ninth consecutive league title. Pirates, on the other hand, have endured a rocky start, losing both of their first two games and languishing in 14th place.
With both teams eager to boost morale, Saturday’s clash promises intensity. For Sundowns, it’s about steadying the ship amid internal distractions, while Pirates are desperate to turn around their early-season slump.
