South Africa’s automotive sector roared to new heights in July 2025, with the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max securing the top three positions in the country’s best-seller list. According to the latest figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), a total of 51,383 vehicles were sold last month marking the highest sales figure since October 2019.
This represents a significant 15.6% year-on-year growth compared to July 2024’s total of 44,452 units, a sign of renewed consumer confidence and resilience in the local market.
“We are encouraged by the sustained positive momentum in new vehicle sales, which clearly underscores the resilience of South African consumers and the strategic importance of a stable macro-economic policy environment,” said Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa.
“This performance reflects more than short-term consumption – it signals the sector’s confidence in the country’s broader economic trajectory.”
Top Performers: Bakkies Still Dominate
South Africa’s love affair with bakkies continued in July, with three double-cab stalwarts leading the charge:
| Rank | Model | Units Sold | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota Hilux | 3,120 | Reliable workhorse, multiple body styles, strong resale value, off-road capable |
| 2 | Ford Ranger | 2,168 | Turbo-diesel options, advanced infotainment, driver-assist features |
| 3 | Isuzu D-Max | 2,002 | Rugged build, fuel-efficient engines, proven reliability |
These top sellers outpaced passenger models like the Toyota Corolla Cross (1,949 units) and Suzuki Swift (1,872), highlighting the sustained popularity of robust utility vehicles in both urban and rural markets.
