Following a confident showing in their MTN8 opener, Orlando Pirates are now turning their attention to the Betway Premiership as they set their sights on dethroning long-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns have enjoyed unprecedented dominance in South African football, clinching the league title for eight consecutive seasons. With their squad depth and consistency, many still see them as favourites to continue their reign. However, under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates are determined to mount a serious challenge.
Ouaddou Confident Ahead of PSL Kick-Off
Ouaddou expressed optimism ahead of the league kick-off, praising his squad’s preparation and mindset.
“The boys are training very well, and we’re eager to kick off the PSL season,” he said. “There’s a lot of pressure and expectations. All the teams are well prepared, but so are we. The support from our fans in the MTN8 was incredible, and we hope they’ll be back to push us again.
We know it will be tough there are no easy games in the PSL. Opponents will come with ambition, but we’re ready. Physically and technically, the players are prepared. Our confidence is high, and the atmosphere in the dressing room is excellent.”
Opening Test Against Sekhukhune United
The Buccaneers’ first hurdle will be Sekhukhune United, with the two sides set to clash at Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening in a 5:30pm kick-off.
Former Pirates striker Benedict Vilakazi believes the Soweto giants are primed for success this season.
“You can see that Pirates mean business this season,” Vilakazi told SportsBoom.co.za. “Last season they fell short, but the new signings show they are serious about challenging for the title.”
Message to the Champions
With a strong pre-season, renewed ambition, and vocal backing from their supporters, Pirates will be eager to start their campaign with a statement victory and send a clear message to the defending champions.
