Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained why key strikers Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa were left out of the starting XI in the Buccaneers’ commanding 2-0 win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals this past weekend.
Speaking at the Betway Premiership launch event held in Sandton, the Moroccan coach reiterated that both forwards are still central to his plans, but emphasized the need for freshness and smart squad management with a long season ahead.
“Makgopa and Mabasa are very important to me. I’ve known them from before. This season, we have a large squad, and we need to be fresh for every game because we’re involved in many competitions,” Ouaddou explained. “You win games with a starting XI, but you win competitions with a group.”
He also revealed that the duo had been involved in a separate training game earlier in the day, highlighting the club’s broader preparation efforts and the depth available in the squad.
Human-Centered Approach to Coaching
Ouaddou’s approach goes beyond tactical decisions he stressed the value of treating players with care and honesty. According to the former Marumo Gallants mentor, maintaining strong human relationships within the team is just as vital as technical planning.
“I always say, give love to everybody. Treat them as human beings first. You need to build trust and be sincere not just act like a coach. When players feel genuine care, they stay motivated and united. That’s key when you’re competing on so many fronts.”
His philosophy reflects a deeper understanding of the emotional demands of top-flight football, especially at a club like Pirates that is expected to perform consistently in both domestic and continental competitions.
What’s Next for the Buccaneers
Orlando Pirates will kick off their 2025/26 Betway Premiership season with a home clash against Sekhukhune United this Saturday at Orlando Stadium. Fans will be eager to see how Ouaddou continues to utilize his attacking arsenal in the coming weeks, especially with such a demanding calendar ahead.
Ouaddou’s decision to rest Makgopa and Mabasa is a clear sign of a long-term vision one that balances performance with sustainability. By rotating his squad and focusing on the human element of coaching, the Pirates boss is building a foundation not just for victories, but for lasting success.
