The curtain has officially closed on the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League season with the announcement of this year’s PSL Awards winners. After a brief delay caused by Mamelodi Sundowns’ participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, the prestigious awards ceremony took place on Tuesday evening, celebrating standout performers across South African football.
Sundowns Receive Chairman’s Recognition
League chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza opened the evening by presenting the Chairman’s Award to Mamelodi Sundowns. The accolade recognised the club’s impressive representation of the PSL at the FIFA Club World Cup, where they finished as the top African team.
Relebohile Mofokeng scooped the MTN8 Last Man Standing award, marking the beginning of a successful night for the young Orlando Pirates star. Meanwhile, Elvis Chipezeze was honoured as the Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament following his stellar displays.
In the Nedbank Cup, Mbekezeli Mbokazi was named Most Promising Player, edging out Mofokeng, while Pule Mmodi of Kaizer Chiefs was awarded Player of the Tournament for his consistent performances.
Orlando Pirates Sweep Premiership Positional Awards
Orlando Pirates asserted their dominance in the Betway Premiership positional categories:
- Sipho Chaine – Goalkeeper of the Season
- Nkosinathi Sibisi – Defender of the Season
- Makhehleni Makhaula – Midfielder of the Season
- Relebohile Mofokeng – Young Player of the Season (his second award of the night)
Lucas Ribeiro Costa Dominates the Night
The biggest winner of the night was undoubtedly Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns. The Brazilian forward took home an impressive four awards:
- PSL Footballer of the Season
- DStv Premiership Player’s Player of the Season
- Golden Boot Winner (Top Goalscorer)
- Goal of the Season – for his sensational solo strike against Orlando Pirates
Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach Miguel Cardoso was honoured as the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season, beating out Stellenbosch’s Steve Barker and Pirates’ Jose Riveiro.
