Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele believes the Toyota Cup offers the perfect platform to boost team morale and unity ahead of the upcoming Betway Premiership season. Following a challenging pre-season tour in the Netherlands, the Soweto giants will face Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban (kick-off 3pm), using the clash as a springboard for a fresh start.

The Amakhosi endured a tough time in Europe, losing four out of five friendly matches. But for new head coach Nasreddine Nabi, the results weren’t the main focus. Instead, it was about laying a foundation, instilling tactical discipline, and fostering a strong sense of unity among players.

Cele: “Being Back Home Feels Special”

Speaking after the team’s return from the Netherlands, Cele expressed optimism about what lies ahead.

“It’s been a blessed journey since returning. Being back home is always special the support I receive here is overwhelming and drives me to push harder,” said Cele. “There’s a real sense of togetherness in the team, and that’s what we’re building on.”

New Signings Boost Squad Depth and Energy

The Chiefs’ squad has been bolstered by six new signings during the current transfer window: Ethan Chislett, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, Flavio Silva, and Nkanyiso Shinga. Only four of them Chislett, Silva, Monyane, and Shinga were part of the Netherlands tour, while Ndlovu and Mako have now integrated with the squad back in South Africa.

Cele emphasized the importance of the new arrivals and how they’ve added energy and purpose to the team.

“They bring something special to the table. What’s more important is they understand the mission and the expectations,” he said. “There’s genuine positivity in the squad. It’s not just talk. We were pushed in those European games, and that’s when you really grow as a team.”

A Chance to Right the Wrongs of Last Season

Chiefs will be hoping to turn the page after a disappointing 2023/24 season that saw them struggle for consistency, with the Nedbank Cup being the only silverware to show for their efforts. Fans will also remember the painful 4-0 thrashing by Young Africans at the Toyota Stadium, a result that cast a shadow over their campaign.

This time around, Cele believes the Toyota Cup can be a catalyst for change.

“We have talked amongst ourselves. Every game this season matters. Every 90 minutes is an opportunity. Saturday’s match is not just a friendly it’s a chance to show what we’re building,” he said.

A Rallying Cry to the Amakhosi Faithful

The 26-year-old midfielder also had a message for the Amakhosi faithful ahead of the Durban showdown.

“We need the supporters now more than ever. Chiefs is more than just a club it’s a spirit. And I feel that spirit in the fans. Let’s pack Moses Mabhida and show our strength as one family,” Cele urged.

As Chiefs continue to reshape their identity under Nabi’s leadership, Saturday’s Toyota Cup clash may well be more than a warm-up. It could be the first real spark of a new era.
