City Power Launches Meter Inspections in Roodepoort – What Residents Need to Know to Prevent Costly Fines
Residents of Roodepoort, take note – City Power has launched an important round of meter audits across the region, and the cost of ignoring it could be shocking.
City Power has officially kicked off a critical meter auditing programme within the Roodepoort Service Delivery Centre (SDC) area, running from Monday, July 14 until August 31, 2025. The objective? To enhance billing accuracy and improve transparency while clamping down on faulty or tampered meters.
Why Are These Audits Happening?
According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, this initiative is part of City Power’s drive to modernise operations, improve customer service, and ensure everyone pays fairly for the electricity they use.
“It’s vital that all customers are properly metered,” Mangena explains. “Where audits are refused or meters are found to be faulty or tampered with, we will disconnect supply and impose a penalty.”
And the numbers aren’t small. Residents with single-phase connections risk fines starting at R14 000, while those with three-phase connections may face penalties exceeding R30 000 – plus reconnection costs.
How the Process Works
City Power metering technicians will be visiting homes throughout the audit period. If a resident is unavailable during a visit, technicians will leave a ‘No Access’ letter at the property. This letter includes the team leader’s name, SDC details, and contact information so residents can reschedule the audit promptly.
Residents are encouraged to allow immediate access where possible to avoid any inconvenience or fines.
Keeping Residents Safe: How to Verify Technicians
City Power is well aware of safety concerns, particularly the possibility of criminals impersonating technicians. To prevent this, all employees and contractors must carry official City Power ID cards, which include:
- A colour-coded layout depending on the department
- The employee’s photograph and personal details
- The contractor’s badge number and expiry date
- A visible firefly hologram for authenticity
- Contact information for the Security Risk Management Control Room
Mangena advises residents to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be from City Power by calling the Security Risk Management Control Room, checking with their ward councillor, or contacting the relevant SDC office.
