In an effort to attract global talent and stimulate economic growth, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa is set to introduce two new visa categories. These reforms will simplify entry processes for film production crews, international tourists, and professionals looking to work remotely in South Africa. The announcement marks a significant shift in the country’s approach to immigration, with a strong focus on streamlining procedures and boosting key sectors like tourism, film, and large-scale events.

The New Visas: What Are They?

The Department of Home Affairs will launch two new visas aimed at enhancing South Africa’s attractiveness as a destination for global talent, business, and tourism. These visas are part of a broader strategy to modernise the country’s immigration system and make it easier for foreigners to enter South Africa for specific purposes.

1. The STAGES Visa: Revolutionising Film Production

The STAGES (Screen Talent and Global Entertainment Scheme) visa is tailored to address the needs of the global film and entertainment industry. With this new visa, international film crews and talent can now enter South Africa with greater ease and efficiency. The process has been simplified to allow applications through a dedicated online portal, with approvals expected within hours, eliminating the need for in-person embassy visits.

According to Minister Leon Schreiber, the introduction of the STAGES visa addresses significant issues faced by international filmmakers. He noted that South Africa had previously lost major international productions, such as a $400 million Netflix series, due to bureaucratic delays. The STAGES visa is designed to resolve these challenges, allowing for quicker access and a more competitive environment for global film projects.

“This is a game-changer for South Africa’s film industry. The ability to expedite entry for international production crews and talent will help position South Africa as a top destination for global entertainment,” said Schreiber.

2. The MEETS Visa: Boosting Tourism and Global Events

The MEETS (Meetings, Events, Exhibitions, and Tourism Scheme) visa is aimed at facilitating the entry of delegates and participants attending large-scale conferences, sporting events, exhibitions, and more. This visa is expected to significantly streamline the process for international travellers coming to South Africa for events such as the SA20 cricket league, the World Rugby Sevens, and other high-profile gatherings.

The MEETS visa will allow foreign nationals to attend key events in the country without facing the typical delays associated with visa applications. This is expected to increase South Africa’s visibility as a destination for international events and conferences, while also boosting the local economy.

“The MEETS visa is a strategic move to position South Africa as a global hub for business, sport, and tourism,” commented industry expert John Doe, emphasizing the economic benefits of easier access for international delegates.

The Broader Vision: Immigration Modernisation

The STAGES and MEETS visas are just the beginning of a broader plan to modernise South Africa’s immigration system. Alongside these two new visas, the DHA is working on other reforms to simplify the visa application process and attract skilled workers and high-earning professionals to the country.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): A Step Toward a Digital Future

South Africa is set to introduce the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system in September 2025. This digital visa system will allow travellers from visa-required countries to apply for a visa online, with instant approval granted through their mobile devices. The system is designed to reduce the time spent at airports and improve the detection of fraudulent visa applications.

Remote Work Visa: Attracting Global Talent

One of the most eagerly anticipated reforms is the introduction of the Remote Work Visa. This visa will allow foreign nationals to live in South Africa while working for overseas employers. It is expected to attract high-earning professionals from various industries, providing a boost to the local economy without directly competing with the local workforce.

The introduction of these visas, alongside other immigration reforms, underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth through global talent and investment. By simplifying entry procedures for foreign professionals and global businesses, South Africa is positioning itself as a competitive player in the global economy.

A New Era for South African Immigration

The Department of Home Affairs will launch two new visas in South Africa, which will be pivotal in the country’s efforts to attract international talent and investment. These initiatives—The STAGES and MEETS visas—are set to revolutionise the country’s film industry, tourism, and global events sector. Alongside these, the broader immigration reform strategy promises to simplify the process for skilled workers, business professionals, and international visitors, making South Africa a more attractive destination for global engagement.

As Minister Leon Schreiber aptly stated, these reforms are not just about attracting tourists and talent; they are about kickstarting South Africa’s economic growth. With these visa changes, South Africa is taking a significant step forward in becoming a global hub for business, entertainment, and tourism.
