Steenhuisen Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Ramaphosa After Whitfield’s Axing

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen issues 48-hour ultimatum to Ramaphosa following the dismissal of Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield. This challenge comes after Whitfield, a member of the DA, was removed from his position without prior warning, sparking a heated debate over the President’s handling of his Cabinet and accountability within the Government of National Unity (GNU).

As a prominent member of the DA, Whitfield’s removal has drawn strong reactions from opposition parties. The lack of transparency surrounding the decision has intensified the controversy, especially given that ministers with serious corruption allegations remain in office. The DA, in particular, has expressed concern about what they perceive as double standards in the President’s decision-making.

The Whitfield Dismissal: What Happened?

On June 26, 2025, President Ramaphosa made the controversial decision to dismiss Andrew Whitfield from his position. While the official reason for the dismissal remains unclear, speculation points to Whitfield’s unsanctioned trip to the United States earlier this year as a likely cause.

This decision has drawn attention, especially since Whitfield is a member of the DA, a key partner in the Government of National Unity (GNU). The lack of communication from the Presidency regarding the dismissal has further intensified criticism. Many are questioning why Whitfield, who is accused of no severe misconduct, was removed, while other government ministers facing serious corruption allegations remain in office.

Steenhuisen Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum to Ramaphosa

In response to the dismissal, Steenhuisen issued a stark warning to Ramaphosa: reinstate Whitfield within 48 hours or face unspecified consequences. The DA leader expressed his frustration with the President’s decision, accusing him of applying double standards by allowing ministers with corruption allegations to remain in power, while Whitfield, with no such accusations, was dismissed.

“Why is Whitfield being dismissed while other ministers with far more serious allegations against them remain untouched?” Steenhuisen asked. This challenge to the President’s actions has added fuel to the fire, creating a rift between the DA and the ANC, the two major parties in the coalition.

ANC’s Response

While the DA is furious with Ramaphosa’s decision, the African National Congress (ANC) has supported the President’s actions. ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bengu-Motsiri defended the dismissal, stating that the President has the right to hire and fire members of his executive team as he sees fit.

The ANC’s support highlights the ongoing division between coalition partners, with each party having a different view on the President’s handling of the situation. While the DA views it as an unjustified move, the ANC argues it was within the President’s constitutional rights.

Political Experts Weigh In

Political analysts have commented on the significance of this development. Dr. Nonhlanhla Mhlongo, a political expert, suggested that the dismissal of Whitfield signals growing tensions within the GNU. She highlighted that coalition governments, particularly those as ideologically diverse as South Africa’s, often struggle with maintaining unity. “The removal of Whitfield is a sign of deeper issues within the coalition, particularly around accountability and transparency,” said Dr. Mhlongo.

She also pointed out that such public ultimatums can damage the stability of a coalition government, which relies on cooperation between parties. “When partners in a coalition challenge each other so openly, it makes it harder to govern effectively,” she added.

What’s Next for the DA and the Presidency?

As the 48-hour deadline looms, all eyes are on Ramaphosa. Will he reinstate Whitfield, or will he stand firm in his decision? If the DA’s demands are ignored, Steenhuisen could escalate the political pressure, potentially leading to a more significant confrontation.

The outcome of this situation could have far-reaching implications for the future of the coalition government. If the DA chooses to act on its threats, it could lead to greater instability within the governing partnership. Conversely, if Ramaphosa compromises, it might be seen as a sign of weakness and inconsistency.

A Tense Political Moment

The dispute between the DA and the President has added a new layer of tension to South African politics. The political fallout from the dismissal of Andrew Whitfield, along with the 48-hour ultimatum, has highlighted the difficulties of maintaining a unified coalition in a politically diverse environment.

As we await the President’s response, it’s clear that this issue will have lasting consequences for both the DA and the ANC. The outcome will likely influence the political landscape in the run-up to the next election, as the parties continue to navigate the challenges of governance within a coalition.
