Rand Water Announces Planned Water Outages: List of Affected Areas
SHARE

Rand Water has announced a major planned water outage affecting various areas in Gauteng. Starting from 30 June until 21 July 2025, the maintenance work will impact the Eikenhof system, causing disruptions in Randburg and Roodepoort. This planned maintenance aims to enhance the system’s efficiency and reliability, but it will affect water supply for a significant period.

Why is the Planned Water Outage Necessary?

Rand Water’s maintenance work is crucial to maintaining the integrity and functionality of its water supply systems. The Eikenhof system, which supplies water to several communities in the region, requires repairs and upgrades that will cause temporary interruptions. The planned outage involves a gradual reduction in water pumping, starting with no water for six hours, followed by 50% capacity for 42 hours, and finally, an 80% reduction for the remaining 19 days of the maintenance period.

While this may cause inconvenience, the goal is to ensure long-term improvements that will benefit water supply stability and quality in the future.

Key Details of the Planned Water Outage

Here are the key details of the planned water interruption:

  • Date of Maintenance: 30 June – 21 July 2025
  • Initial Water Supply Impact: No water pumping for the first 6 hours
  • Second Phase: Water pumping will increase to 50% for the next 42 hours
  • Third Phase: Water pumping will reach 80% capacity for the final 19 days

During these phases, Johannesburg Water (JHB Water) has issued a reminder to residents in the affected areas to store water in advance. For those who experience severe disruption, water tankers will be deployed after the 24-hour period of reduced supply.

Affected Areas in Randburg & Roodepoort

The following areas in Randburg and Roodepoort will be impacted by the planned water outage. Residents and businesses in these regions are urged to make necessary preparations, such as storing water, to mitigate the effects.

  • Honeydew

How to Prepare for the Water Outage

Residents in the affected areas should take the following steps to prepare for the planned water outage:

  1. Store Water in Advance
It is crucial to store sufficient water for daily use before the maintenance begins. Ensure that you have enough water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and other essential activities.
  2. Check Water Storage Containers
If you have water storage tanks, make sure they are clean and ready to store the water. This will help ensure you have access to water during the reduced supply period.
  3. Use Water Wisely
During the maintenance period, use water as efficiently as possible. This includes reducing unnecessary water usage, such as limiting water for non-essential tasks.
  4. Stay Updated
Stay updated by following updates from Johannesburg Water and Rand Water on social media (@Rand_Water) and other communication channels. They will provide real-time updates and further guidance on the water supply status.
  5. Alternative Water Supply
In case the water outage impacts your area for longer than expected, Johannesburg Water has confirmed that water tankers will be deployed to assist residents. These tankers will be available 24 hours after the start of the disruption.

Impact on Local Businesses and Households

The planned water outage is likely to have significant effects on both households and businesses in the affected areas. Small businesses, especially those reliant on water for their operations (such as restaurants, laundromats, and cleaning services), should prepare by ensuring they have enough water supply or plan for temporary adjustments to their operations.

Households with young children, elderly members, or individuals with special needs should take extra precautions to ensure they have an adequate water supply, especially in case of extended disruptions.

Plan Ahead for the Water Outage

Rand Water’s planned maintenance from 30 June to 21 July is a necessary step to maintain the reliability of the Eikenhof system. Although it will cause temporary disruptions in the water supply, being prepared can help ease the inconvenience. Remember to store water in advance, reduce water usage where possible, and stay informed through Johannesburg Water’s communication channels.
