Thembinkosi Lorch may soon find himself back in Bafana Bafana colours after delivering a standout performance for Wydad Athletic Club in their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday night.
Despite Wydad’s uphill battle against the reigning European giants, the 31-year-old South African winger was a constant attacking presence, showing flashes of the form that once made him a mainstay in the national team.
A Lone Bright Spark in a Tough Night
Though the Moroccan champions fell behind just two minutes into the game — thanks to a quick strike from Phil Foden — and conceded a second before halftime via Jeremy Doku, Lorch remained one of Wydad’s most consistent threats. He weaved inside and out from the flanks, created space in tight areas, and provided much-needed spark in an otherwise blunt attack.
His return to form is a remarkable turnaround for a player who had struggled for minutes at Mamelodi Sundowns earlier this season. A loan spell at Wydad has seemingly reignited his career, with coach Amine Benhachem now benefiting from the groundwork laid by former Sundowns manager Rulani Mokwena, who initially brought Lorch to the Moroccan outfit.
Mailula Fades in the Shadow
While Lorch caught the eye, fellow South African Cassius Mailula had a more subdued evening. The young striker, leading Wydad’s front line, found himself isolated and without service for much of the first half. He was eventually substituted at halftime as the coaching staff looked to change the game’s momentum.
City, even without several of their first-choice stars, demonstrated their class and control throughout the contest. Their early goals allowed them to manage the game efficiently, repelling Wydad’s spirited but ultimately ineffective attacks.
A New Chapter for Lorch – and Possibly Bafana
Still, Lorch’s performance offered a silver lining. His renewed confidence, showcased in purposeful touches and decisive runs, has sparked conversations about a possible recall to the national team. With Bafana Bafana preparing for future international competitions, his resurgence could not come at a better time.
Lorch’s evolution at Wydad — from a fringe player to one of the side’s most important creative forces — reflects both his mental resilience and the value of strategic career moves. If he continues on this trajectory, a return to the national setup seems not just possible, but inevitable.
