City of Tshwane Announces Scheduled Electricity Outages in Pretoria North, Soshanguve, and East as Substation Maintenance Takes Place
Residents in several parts of Pretoria are bracing for an extended power outage, as the City of Tshwane embarks on critical substation maintenance aimed at improving long-term service delivery.
Why the Outage?
The City of Tshwane’s Energy and Electricity Department has confirmed that electricity supply to multiple areas will be temporarily halted for up to three days — between Monday, 17 June and Wednesday, 19 June 2025. The disruptions are due to scheduled maintenance and testing at the Wolmer and K1 substations, which play a pivotal role in supplying power to Pretoria North and Soshanguve.
This intervention follows a recent vandalism incident at the Wolmer Substation in Onderstepoort, which had already left many residents in the dark. According to city spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, the current work is intended to boost substation safety, test supply efficiency, and prepare the infrastructure for high-demand periods.

Mashigo extended apologies on behalf of the city and encouraged residents to plan accordingly, noting that technicians will strive to adhere to the outlined schedule.
Additional Outage in Pretoria East
Separately, a 132kV trip at the Wapadrand Substation on Tuesday led to widespread outages in:
- Wapadrand
- Equestria
- Silver Lakes
- Silverwoods Country Estate
- Willow Acres
As of Wednesday morning (18 June), many of these areas were reportedly still without power, with technical teams dispatched to investigate and restore supply.
