As the FIFA Club World Cup continues to showcase the best of global club football, Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca are set to begin their campaign against European powerhouse Manchester City — with South African talent playing a crucial role in their ambitions.
South African Presence Felt Beyond Mamelodi Sundowns
While Mamelodi Sundowns are proudly representing South Africa in their second Club World Cup appearance in the United States, the nation’s influence extends beyond just one team. South African players are making their mark in other participating clubs as well, demonstrating the country’s growing footprint on the international stage.
Tunisian outfit Esperance de Tunis, still licking their wounds after a narrow CAF Champions League semi-final exit to Sundowns, faced a tough opening match at the tournament. They fell 2-0 to Brazilian side Flamengo, who fielded stars such as ex-Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Jorginho. South Africa’s Elias Mokwana was named among the substitutes but made an appearance early in the second half, contributing to a brighter second-half showing despite the loss. Esperance now face must-win games against Los Angeles FC and Chelsea to keep their hopes alive.
Wydad’s Tough Task: Take Down City
For Wydad Casablanca, who finished third in Morocco’s Botola Pro League, the task ahead is formidable. They open their campaign on Wednesday at 6pm SA time against none other than reigning Club World Cup champions Manchester City. Despite their continental success, City are coming off a less-than-ideal domestic campaign, finishing third in the English Premier League — 13 points adrift of champions Liverpool.
Though still boasting a squad brimming with world-class talent and led by esteemed manager Pep Guardiola, City have been integrating younger players and have shown occasional defensive vulnerabilities — something Wydad will aim to exploit.
Cassius Mailula: Key to Wydad’s Attack
South African forward Cassius Mailula has become an indispensable asset for Wydad. Under the guidance of former coach Rulani Mokwena, Mailula flourished, racking up five goals and seven assists across 27 appearances this season. His creativity and composure in the final third will be essential if Wydad hope to unlock a Manchester City defence that, while experienced, has shown recent cracks.
Thembinkosi Lorch: A Rejuvenated Threat
Joining Mailula in the Wydad setup is Thembinkosi Lorch, another South African star who initially faced challenges in securing playing time after arriving on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. However, Lorch has since found his form and is now considered a vital part of the team’s setup heading into the group stage.
With matches against European giants Juventus and UAE’s Al Ain still to come in Group G, Wydad will need all their firepower — and both Mailula and Lorch are expected to be central to their tactical plans.
A Chance to Make History
As Wydad take on one of world football’s most accomplished sides, the presence of two influential South Africans gives Bafana Bafana fans plenty to cheer for. If Mailula and Lorch can perform at their peak, Wydad could be well-placed to cause an upset and make a serious run in the tournament.
For South Africa, the Club World Cup is proving to be more than just Sundowns’ stage — it’s a platform where the country’s football talent continues to shine brightly.
