Kaizer Chiefs winger Gaston Sirino is facing serious legal and financial trouble after it emerged that he owes the South African Revenue Service (SARS) a staggering R6.1 million in unpaid personal taxes. The revelation, first reported by Sunday World, has placed the Uruguayan international under intense scrutiny.
From Sundowns Success to Chiefs Stardom
Sirino, who made his move to South African football back in 2018 when he joined Mamelodi Sundowns, enjoyed a highly successful stint with the Pretoria-based club. During his six years at Sundowns, he lifted nine major trophies, cementing his reputation as one of the most skilful players in the PSL. In 2024, he signed with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, where he has become a key figure in coach Nasreddine Nabi’s squad.
Despite his contributions on the field, Sirino’s financial affairs appear to be under pressure. According to a formal letter issued by SARS and cited in the media, the 34-year-old has outstanding tax obligations from multiple financial periods. The tax authority has demanded that Sirino settle the full amount within 10 days, or face severe legal consequences.
Legal Consequences Looming
“You are requested to make full payment within 10 days from the date of this letter of demand,” reads the SARS communication. The letter outlines that failure to comply could lead to the garnishing of wages or funds held by third parties on his behalf. Moreover, it warns of potential civil judgment, which could result in a sheriff being instructed to attach and auction his assets.
SARS also indicated that while individuals may apply for a reduction based on basic living expenses, or financial hardship in the case of businesses, such relief is not guaranteed and subject to approval.
This development comes at a time when Kaizer Chiefs are undergoing a significant rebuild. Although the club recently ended its trophy drought with a hard-fought win over Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, their league performance remains underwhelming. The Glamour Boys finished outside the top eight for the second consecutive season, a statistic that has sparked speculation around squad changes and incoming transfers — with names like Percy Tau being floated as possible signings.
All Eyes on Sirino’s Next Move
Sirino’s tax saga adds another layer of complexity to Chiefs’ off-season narrative. While fans are celebrating the recent cup victory and looking forward to the future, the controversy surrounding one of their star players could prove a distraction as the club aims to restore its former dominance.
As it stands, all eyes are on Sirino’s next move — both on and off the pitch — as he races against the clock to resolve his financial standoff with SARS.
