Rulani Mokwena is currently a free agent after officially parting ways with Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco early last month. The 38-year-old has since returned to South Africa for a brief break while evaluating his options with his representatives.
Pyramids Crowned CAF Champions League Winners
Pyramids FC recently celebrated their first CAF Champions League title, defeating South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate. The victory marked a major milestone for the Egyptian club and raised expectations for future success.
Despite this landmark achievement, head coach Krunoslav Jurcic was ambiguous about his future with the team.
“I need to meet with the club’s leadership. I have big ambitions, and if the club matches those ambitions, we can build something even greater,” said the Croatian tactician, fuelling speculation that he might not remain in charge.
Pyramids Open Talks with Rulani Mokwena
In response to the uncertainty surrounding Jurcic, insiders confirm that Pyramids FC are already exploring potential alternatives. Club officials reportedly traveled to South Africa to initiate talks with Mokwena about possibly leading the team next season and beyond.
Mokwena has previously stated that he does not intend to stay out of work for long and is open to entertaining offers. He was recently approached by Zamalek, but he opted out of discussions upon learning that his mentor, Pitso Mosimane, was also being considered for the role.
Though his spell with Wydad was described as “difficult,” a return to North African football is not off the table for Mokwena, especially with Pyramids offering an attractive and ambitious project.
A Potential New Era for Pyramids
Should the talks progress, Mokwena’s appointment could signal a significant shift for Pyramids FC as they look to build on their recent continental success. The coming weeks may determine whether Mokwena steps back onto the North African stage or explores opportunities elsewhere.
