Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa has unveiled initial details of its newest and most compact offering of the year—the Jaecoo J5—which is poised to make its debut in the local market during the third quarter of 2025.
Following its global premiere in October 2024 and subsequent appearance at the Shanghai International Auto Show in March 2025, the J5 is being positioned as a compact crossover that slots beneath the larger Jaecoo J7. The Chery-backed brand claims the new model will “raise the bar” in its segment with advanced features and a competitive powertrain lineup.
Petrol-Powered Launch, Hybrid to Follow
While the J5 was also showcased in electric form in Shanghai, South African buyers will first receive the petrol variant. This version is powered by Chery’s tried-and-tested 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (T-GDI) engine—already in use across the Tiggo range and the Omoda C5. The engine delivers 115 kW and 230 Nm of torque and is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), sending power exclusively to the front wheels.

Looking ahead, Jaecoo plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version under its SHS—or Super Hybrid System—badging. This variant is expected to boast a combined output of 145 kW, with local availability potentially set for late 2025 or early 2026.
