As Pyramids FC prepare for the biggest match in their club’s history, star striker Fiston Mayele has moved to downplay speculation about a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, insisting in an exclusive interview with SABC Sport that his priority remains helping the Egyptian club lift the CAF Champions League trophy.
“My focus is on the team and helping Pyramids win the final, and after the final, everyone is free to talk and speculate,” Mayele told SABC Sport during a pre-training media session on Thursday afternoon in Pretoria.
Mayele and his teammates are gearing up to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final this Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. It’s a historic occasion for Pyramids FC, who are appearing in their first-ever final on the continent’s biggest club stage. Mayele’s goals and leadership have been pivotal to their journey.
“I was very happy to score the last goal against Orlando Pirates, but I’m also happy to help the team in any way I can,” he told SABC Sport, referring to his performance in the semi-final.
Kaizer Chiefs Transfer Rumours: “The Rest Can Wait”
The Congolese forward has recently been linked with a transfer to Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa’s most prominent clubs, who are reportedly targeting attacking reinforcements ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Despite the growing speculation, Mayele reiterated to SABC Sport that his current focus remains with his team.
“I’ve heard the rumours about Kaizer Chiefs, but honestly, my focus is here. We have a final to win and history to make. The rest can wait,” Mayele said.
The 30-year-old striker has attracted attention from clubs across Africa due to his standout performances in both the Egyptian Premier League and the Champions League. Still, he remains committed to completing what he started with Pyramids.
A Final That Could Define a Legacy
Saturday’s encounter will see Sundowns, the 2016 Champions League winners, take on a rising force in Pyramids FC. The second leg is scheduled to take place in Cairo, setting up an intense two-legged battle for African supremacy.
Mayele—celebrated for his pace, physical presence, and finishing ability—will be a central figure in the Egyptian side’s hopes of securing a first continental crown.
“We are ready. This is about writing history, not just for ourselves but for the club and the fans,” he told SABC Sport.
With mounting pressure ahead of this high-stakes fixture and ongoing transfer chatter, Mayele’s composed and professional approach, as reflected in his repeated interviews with SABC Sport, will be vital to Pyramids’ chances.
