University of Johannesburg unveils UJ Digital with over 100 online programmes, aiming to expand access to quality education and support working professionals.
In a bold stride into the digital era, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has officially launched UJ Digital, a groundbreaking online learning platform that offers over 100 programmes, including full qualifications and short learning options. The initiative is designed to increase access to quality education for students unable to secure physical spots on campus while supporting working professionals aiming to upgrade their skills.
A Strategic Response to Demand and Digital Reality
According to UJ Vice-Chancellor Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, UJ Digital is not a competitor to Unisa, South Africa’s longstanding distance-learning giant, but rather a complementary force in the digital education space. “The aim is not to dethrone Unisa in any way. They are very established. This is about expanding access, offering flexibility, and keeping the UJ brand strong,” Mpedi said during the launch.
The university received over 400,000 applications for just 10,900 available spots for full-time study this year. Recognising this gap, UJ Digital provides a critical intervention, ensuring that capable students don’t get left behind simply due to capacity limitations.
What’s on Offer: Full Qualifications & Short Courses
UJ Digital’s diverse offerings include 17 full qualifications in high-demand fields such as:
- Advanced Diploma in Real Estate
- Master of Education in Educational Management
- Master of Public Health
- Diploma in Paralegal Studies
- Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law
Later in 2025, UJ will introduce three undergraduate qualifications:
- Advanced Diploma in Financial Markets
- BCom in Accountancy
- Bachelor of Human Resource Management
The rest of the digital portfolio includes short learning programmes ranging from business and law to IT, health sciences, and communications.
Cost-Effective and Quality-Assured
UJ has set tuition fees with accessibility in mind. Depending on the programme duration:
- Full qualifications cost between R10,000 and R80,000
- Short learning programmes range from R4,000 to R17,000
Mpedi noted that UJ Digital is operated in-house, not via a third-party provider, which helps keep costs low while maintaining rigorous academic standards. All qualifications are quality-assured internally and aligned with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and Council on Higher Education (CHE) standards.
“UJ is a brand that should not and will not be compromised through our eagerness to meet this demand,” said Mpedi.

Beyond Academics: Digital Community Building
UJ Digital aims to mirror the traditional campus experience by including student community spaces. “There should be a hangout, an online chatroom for students to meet and socialise,” Mpedi emphasised. The goal is not just academics but also a sense of digital belonging.
UJ staff involved in online teaching will be compensated per university policy, and the revenue generated will support their respective faculties.
Gazing Ahead
Senior Director of Academic Development and Support, Professor Suzy Graham, stated that UJ expects at least 5,000 new online enrolments by 2030, although the team is optimistic that this number could grow. She also confirmed that online students will receive the same support as contact students.
However, no government subsidies or NSFAS support will be available for these programmes, so prospective students must pay upfront.
“This is not a get-rich scheme,” Mpedi joked. “If it were, we’d launch thousands of programmes immediately.”
Plans are in place to expand undergraduate offerings to include community development, leadership, and sport and exercise science within the next 2–3 years.
Fighting Bogus Institutions
UJ Digital will undergo aggressive marketing to differentiate itself from unaccredited or fake online colleges. According to Professor Bongani Ngqulunga, the goal is to ensure prospective students recognise UJ Digital as a high-quality, trustworthy institution.
Clicking into the Future: UJ Digital Redefines the Game
UJ Digital is not just a response to post-pandemic education trends—it’s a forward-thinking evolution of the university’s mission to empower students through flexible, accessible, and affordable learning. While Unisa remains a cornerstone of South African distance learning, UJ Digital is carving its own space—one byte at a time.
As Mpedi puts it: “The future is digital, and UJ is ready to lead it.”
