9-Hour Power Outage to Hit These 11 Areas in Gauteng
SHARE

Eskom has announced a 9-hour power outage scheduled to affect 11 areas in Gauteng, specifically targeting parts of Katlehong and Braamfischer Phase 2. This planned power outage in Gauteng will take place from Monday, 19 May, until Tuesday, 20 May, as part of essential maintenance on Eskom’s distribution network. Here’s a detailed overview of what residents need to know to prepare.

Which Areas Will Be Affected by the 9-Hour Power Outage?

On Monday, 19 May, from 09:00 to 18:00, ten areas in Katlehong will experience a power disruption. These areas include:

  • Monise
  • Palime
  • Moseleki
  • Tsolo
  • Ramokonopi
  • Phooki
  • Mopeli
  • Motsamai
  • Hlahatsi
  • Mokoena

Then, on Tuesday, 20 May, Braamfischer Phase 2 will also undergo the same 9-hour outage during the same hours.

Eskom has made it clear that this interruption is necessary for performing critical maintenance on the power distribution lines to improve reliability, especially with the colder months approaching.

Why Is Eskom Carrying Out This Maintenance?

The scheduled 9-hour power outage is part of Eskom’s ongoing efforts to maintain and stabilise the electricity grid. According to the power utility, these preventative maintenance activities are crucial to preparing the system for increased demand during the winter season, when power consumption spikes. Eskom emphasised that this maintenance is vital to avoid unexpected outages and ensure a steady power supply.

Despite some pressures on the grid, Eskom reported the system remains stable. Load shedding has been suspended since 22:00 on Thursday, 15 May, signalling an improvement. However, Eskom continues to monitor the situation closely.

How Should Residents Prepare for a Power Outage?

Residents in the affected areas should prepare for the 9-hour power outage in Gauteng by taking necessary safety precautions. Eskom advises treating all electrical appliances as live during the scheduled outage to avoid accidents or damage when power returns.

Here are some practical tips for residents:

  • Charge mobile phones, laptops, and essential devices beforehand.
  • Keep a supply of candles, torches, or battery-powered lamps ready.
  • Avoid opening fridge and freezer doors frequently to maintain cold temperatures.
  • Unplug sensitive appliances to protect them from power surges after restoration.

Eskom’s Message and Contingency

Eskom has thanked the public for their understanding and apologised for any inconvenience caused by the maintenance. They have also noted that the outage could be postponed if unforeseen circumstances arise.

Moreover, Eskom expects to bring an additional 2,650MW of generation capacity online before the evening peak on Monday to further stabilise the grid. This will support the system during the colder months and help avoid unplanned power disruptions.

The upcoming 9-hour power outage in Gauteng is a necessary step to ensure the stability and reliability of the electricity supply through winter. Residents in Katlehong and Braamfischer Phase 2 should prepare accordingly and stay informed through official Eskom updates.
