While Kaizer Chiefs supporters continue to revel in their long-awaited triumph, the Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night was marred by the arrest of five individuals. The final, which saw Chiefs defeat long-standing rivals Orlando Pirates, was a significant occasion, but it also tested the capabilities of local law enforcement.
Nedbank Cup Final Security Concerns Before Kick-off
Ahead of the high-profile clash, fears around safety had grown as thousands of fans rushed to secure scarce tickets. Others suggested they would “make a plan” upon arriving in Durban, raising alarms about potential disorder. These concerns prompted a heightened security presence in and around the stadium.
KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that five arrests were made during the event. Two individuals were caught selling matchday tickets illegally, while another two were apprehended for storming the pitch during the game. A fifth suspect was found operating an unauthorised drone within the stadium’s airspace—an act deemed a serious security breach.
Police Praised for Quick Action
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda emphasised that all suspects would face legal consequences once formally processed. He also noted that law enforcement had once again proven its strength and preparedness under pressure.
“The capacity of the police was once more tested, and the planning and execution of our safety strategy were exemplary,” Netshiunda stated.
Despite no major security incidents occurring during the match, authorities have not dropped their guard. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi issued a stern warning to those who had publicly declared intentions to cause chaos, saying they would not escape justice.
“Those who tried to stir trouble will be traced and dealt with by the law,” Mkhwanazi said. “Intelligence teams are still working to identify and locate the instigators behind these threats.”
Recognition for Law Enforcement Efforts
Mkhwanazi further commended the tireless work of police officers and other law enforcement personnel who worked extended hours to ensure the event ran smoothly.
“For a match of this scale—especially between Soweto giants—to conclude without serious incident shows that police in this province are fully capable of handling large-scale events. I also thank true football fans who respected the rules and cooperated with authorities,” he added.
He highlighted that genuine supporters had no interest in disrupting the event and had largely ignored calls from those with malicious intent.
A Victory On and Off the Field
The final not only brought Kaizer Chiefs a long-awaited trophy after a decade of drought but also showcased the efficiency and readiness of the country’s security forces. Though celebrations carried on late into the night, police made it clear that anyone who broke the law would not go unpunished.
Authorities have promised to continue investigations to ensure that all those who tried to disrupt the event are brought to book.
