Toyota has officially unveiled the updated GR Yaris in South Africa, bringing a host of performance and usability upgrades to its rally-inspired hot hatch. For the first time, the GR Yaris is available locally with an automatic transmission—broadening its appeal without compromising on the aggressive performance it’s known for.
Originally conceived as a road-legal rally car, the GR Yaris was developed in collaboration with Toyota Gazoo Racing and tested extensively on some of the world’s most punishing rally circuits. This motorsport DNA remains core to its identity, and the latest upgrades only reinforce its capabilities.

Debut of the Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT)
The highlight of the 2025 update is the introduction of an all-new eight-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission (DAT). Unlike conventional automatic gearboxes, the DAT leverages intelligent software to predict and execute gear changes based on driver input, ensuring ultra-quick, performance-focused shifts.
This advanced transmission allows for better driver focus during spirited driving, particularly on twisty roads or track environments. Tested under extreme conditions, including participation in the Japan Rally Championship, the DAT has proven its mettle with rapid shifts and strong thermal durability—critical factors for high-performance driving.

Increased Power Output
Toyota has also given the GR Yaris a notable boost under the hood. Its 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine now churns out an impressive 210kW and 400Nm of torque—up from the previous 198kW and 360Nm. This bump in power secures the GR Yaris’ status as a leader in the performance hatchback segment.
Coupled with Toyota’s GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system, the car delivers razor-sharp handling, superb traction, and balanced performance across tarmac, gravel, or any road in between.
Upgraded Interior for a Driver-Centric Feel
Inside, the GR Yaris has been refined with a clear focus on the driver. The cabin features a revised seating position for improved ergonomics, a newly integrated 12.3-inch digital instrument display, and reconfigured controls inspired by rally car layouts. Together, these changes enhance both comfort and control, making the driving experience more immersive.
Three selectable drive modes—Sport, Normal, and Eco—adjust throttle response, steering feel, and gearbox behaviour to suit different driving scenarios, from daily commutes to high-performance adventures.

Colours, Pricing, and Warranty
The updated GR Yaris is offered in five bold colours: Glacier White, Platinum Pearl White, Midnight Grey, Lunar Black, and Fierce Red. In terms of pricing, the manual version is listed at R897,400, while the new automatic variant comes in at R925,300. Both options include a nine-service (90,000km) plan and a three-year/100,000km warranty.
With these enhancements, Toyota continues to bridge the gap between rally-bred performance and everyday drivability, offering South African enthusiasts a more versatile yet thrilling take on the beloved GR Yaris.
