In an interview with SABC Sports, Orlando Pirates head coach José Riveiro spoke with pride and determination about his team’s journey to yet another final, highlighting the hard work and focus that have brought the Buccaneers to this point. Reflecting on their path to the upcoming final, Riveiro was clear about the team’s unwavering commitment to the goal from the very first day of their journey together.
A Pivotal Moment for Orlando Pirates
“It’s a pleasure, it’s an honour to be one more time in the final representing Orlando Pirates,” Riveiro shared, reinforcing the significance of the occasion. “It is what we were looking for since day one, since we started here together. We were lucky enough and we worked hard enough to find ourselves regularly almost in each and every final since we started. It’s something to celebrate one more time.”
Orlando Pirates have been no strangers to finals, and Riveiro expressed his confidence that his squad would remain focused, intent on sticking to their game plan rather than getting distracted by the occasion. The Pirates’ manager emphasized that while it’s important to acknowledge the significance of the final, the real goal is to focus on beating their fierce rivals, Kaizer Chiefs.
Riveiro’s Strategy: Stay Focused, Play the Game Plan
“We don’t play the occasion, we focus on the game plan, we focus on the way that we feel that we can beat Chiefs,” Riveiro continued. “Focus in the way that we feel that they can beat us in order to avoid it, we are gonna try to make Chiefs play bad and we are gonna try to play well. That’s the intention on the day and we have already several times together and we want to make sure that we are better again.”
Riveiro’s strategy is clear – control the game, impose their style, and make sure to capitalize on opportunities. However, he acknowledged that the team will need to improve on one crucial aspect: their start to the game. Reflecting on their previous encounter at FNB Stadium, where they allowed Chiefs to gain an early advantage, Riveiro made it clear that this time they need to come out with more intensity and determination from the very first whistle.
Improving the Starting Phase: A Crucial Adjustment
“It’s true that we need to have a better beginning of the game this time, the way we started one week ago in FNB was too much advantage for Chiefs at that time,” Riveiro explained. “So, this time we need to make sure that we are in a better space in the kick-off, that we are especially doing the things with more determination so we can make that game go to the space where we want to put the game early [lead] in the first half.”
A strong start is key, and Riveiro’s words underline the importance of not giving their opponents any early advantage. This adjustment is vital if Pirates are to dominate the final and take control from the outset.
Playing Multiple “Games” Within 90 Minutes
Riveiro continued to emphasize the need for focus and determination, describing how a single match could feel like several different games. The key, he said, is to be better than your opponent in each of these “games” that unfold during the course of a 90-minute encounter.
“Like I said, usually in the 90 minutes, you usually play six, seven different games, and you have to be better than the opponent,” Riveiro concluded, illustrating the unpredictable nature of football and the resilience required to succeed.
As Orlando Pirates prepare for what promises to be another exciting final, the message from their coach is clear: hard work, focus, and a determination to start strong will be the keys to success against their archrivals, Kaizer Chiefs. Fans can expect a highly competitive and thrilling encounter as the two giants battle for supremacy once more.
