Johannesburg residents should expect an increase in activity when Johannesburg Water and City Power launch their campaign to verify water and electricity meters in May 2025. The water and electricity meter verification process, which runs from May 5 through May 30, is an important step to ensure accurate billing and improve customer satisfaction.

This initiative is designed to eliminate the frustrations that residents have with inaccurate readings and ensure they are only charged for actual electricity and water usage. Johannesburg Water and City Power will be able to provide a fairer billing system for all businesses and households in the city by getting an accurate reading from each meter.

Why is it important to verify the water and electricity meters in Joburg?

Johannesburg’s vast water and electricity system serves millions of homes and businesses. The accuracy of billing is heavily dependent on accurate meter readings. Over the years, residents have expressed concern about getting estimated readings rather than actual measurements. This can lead to either overcharging or undercharging.

This new campaign will tackle these problems by ensuring that all meters are correctly read and residents are billed accurately. Kgamanyane Mphologela is the Director of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement for City Power. She says that accurate readings ensure fair billing and charges to all residents. This initiative is part of a larger effort to improve service delivery, optimize revenue collections, and maintain infrastructure throughout Johannesburg.

Areas affected by the Joburg Water and Electricity Meter verifications

In May 2025, the meter-verification process will be carried out in various suburbs of Johannesburg. The process will take place in phases, with specific areas visited during certain weeks. The breakdown is as follows:

What to Expect During the Verification Process

Johannesburg Water and City Power technicians will verify the water and electricity meters of these areas during the verification period. The technicians will check the meter numbers to ensure that they work properly and verify the readings. Any discrepancies will be corrected immediately.

This process does not involve collecting payments or making immediate adjustments to bills. You’ll be informed if there are any problems with your reading. However, the main goal is to ensure accuracy for future billing cycles.

Verifying Meter Readers: To ensure your peace of mind the verification teams always display official identification badges that include their full name and ID number. To ensure authenticity, they will travel in vehicles with branded logos. You can check the credentials of a meter-reader by calling the city call centre on 086 056 2874 or using the WhatsApp number 083 314 9640.

How can residents prepare for the verification process?

It is important that the residents work with the technicians to ensure the process goes smoothly. Before allowing the verification team access to your meter, make sure they have valid ID.

Check the schedule of verifications in your area. It’s important to be informed because the teams will only visit on specific dates. Notifications will go out through various channels, including local media, municipal websites, and other sources.

Why accurate meter readings matter

This initiative goes beyond resolving billing problems. Johannesburg Water and City Power can offer a more fair billing by replacing estimated readings with real data. This will reduce complaints and frustration from residents.

A city can also better manage its electricity and water resources with accurate readings. The municipality can make better decisions about infrastructure development, water conservation, and energy efficiency when it has precise data on consumption patterns. The long-term sustainability and efficiency of Johannesburg’s utilities will be improved.

The Joburg Water and Electricity Meter verifications, which will take place in May 2025, represent a significant step towards improving the accuracy of utility bills in Johannesburg. Johannesburg Water and City Power have set the foundations for more fair and transparent billing by eliminating estimated readings and verifying all meters.

You should cooperate with the verification team if you live in an affected area to ensure a smooth and efficient process. This initiative promises not only better billing accuracy but also a more sustainable and efficient water and electricity system for Johannesburg.
