The Department of Employment and Labour has announced 130 Counsellor positions under the 2025/2026 Presidential Youth Development Programme (PYDP). This initiative offers unemployed South African graduates a 10-month paid internship, providing practical experience aligned with their academic qualifications.
Programme Overview
The PYDP aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and workplace application. Participants will gain exposure to employment counselling, labour market research, and administrative support within the Department’s provincial offices.
Available Positions
The 130 Counsellor posts are distributed across all nine provinces:
- Gauteng – 16 posts
- KwaZulu-Natal – 16 posts
- Eastern Cape – 16 posts
- Western Cape – 16 posts
- Mpumalanga – 8 posts
- North West – 15 posts
- Northern Cape – 12 posts
- Limpopo – 17 posts
- Free State – 14 posts

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold a three-year tertiary qualification (NQF Level 6 or 7) in Psychology or Industrial Psychology.
- An Honours Degree in the aforementioned fields is advantageous.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Counsellor (Independent Practice) or Psychometrist (Independent Practice) is considered a significant advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to Employment Counsellors.
- Conduct labour market research and analyse employment counselling strategies.
- Facilitate and implement recruitment and selection processes for job seekers.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to verify the quality of services offered to the public.
- Assist with the registration of job seekers on the ESSA database.
Remuneration and Duration
- Monthly stipend: R7,450.63
- Duration: 10 months from the date of appointment
