Breakthrough in the February 2025 disappearance of Pretoria-based journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner as four suspects are arrested and police intensify investigations.
Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the mysterious February 2025 disappearance of Pretoria-based journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner Zodwa Mdhluli, whose case has now been officially reclassified as a kidnapping and car hijacking.
Arrests Made Across Gauteng and Mpumalanga
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a cross-province operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga SAPS—spearheaded by Deputy National Commissioner of Crime Detection Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and Mpumalanga’s Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi—led to the arrests of the suspects on Sunday, May 4th, 2025.
Mathe revealed that the first suspect arrested was the last person seen with the couple, while the other three were found with various vehicle parts suspected to be from Ndlovu’s white Volkswagen Citi Golf.
“One of those arrested is a known mechanic who builds and fixes cars in the KwaMhlanga area. Two VW Citi Golfs in their possession have been seized,” Mathe said.
From Missing to Kidnapped: SAPS Reclassifies Case
Initially treated as a missing persons’ case, SAPS has now escalated the investigation, adding charges of kidnapping, car hijacking, house robbery, and possession of stolen property. One suspect is set to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrates Court today, while the remaining three will appear later this week in KwaMhlanga.
Public Pressure Mounts for Answers
Public concern has mounted in recent weeks, particularly from media organisations. The National Press Club (NPC) and the African Media Communicators Forum (AMCF) offered a R100,000 reward last week for information that could help locate the missing couple.
AMCF chairperson Elijah Mhlanga expressed frustration at the pace of the investigation and the lack of communication. The latest arrests bring a renewed sense of hope that justice may soon be served.

Still No Sign of the Couple
Despite the progress in the investigation, Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli remain missing. Authorities continue to appeal to the public for any information that could assist in locating them.
What’s Next?
The SAPS is expected to pursue forensic analysis on the seized vehicle parts and follow up with interrogations of the suspects. The National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, has commended the efforts of the task teams, calling the arrests a “significant breakthrough.”
As the legal proceedings unfold, South Africans await further updates in a case that has gripped the nation and sparked conversations around press freedom, public safety, and the protection of journalists.
