Understanding the Nursing Profession in South Africa

Nurses in South Africa play a crucial role in the healthcare system, working in various settings such as hospitals, clinics, schools, and community centres. They are responsible for patient care, health education, and supporting doctors in medical procedures. The profession offers several specialisations, including general nursing, midwifery, psychiatric nursing, and community health nursing.

Educational Pathways to Becoming a Nurse

1. Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing (1 year)

  • Purpose: Prepares students to work as auxiliary nurses, providing basic patient care under supervision.

  • Outcome: Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an auxiliary nurse.

2. Diploma in Nursing (3 years)

  • Purpose: Trains students to become enrolled nurses capable of providing comprehensive nursing care.
  • Requirements: NSC or equivalent at exit level 3 or 4, with subjects including English, Life Orientation, and four other subjects with grades of 50-59%.
  • Outcome: Registration with SANC as a general nurse.

3. Bachelor of Nursing (4 years)

  • Outcome: Registration with SANC as a professional nurse

4. Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (1 year)

  • Purpose: Allows registered nurses to specialise further in areas like midwifery or psychiatric nursing.

Steps to Becoming a Registered Nurse

  1. Enroll in a SANC-Accredited Institution: Ensure the nursing college or university is accredited by the South African Nursing Council.
  2. Complete the Required Education and Training: Fulfil all academic and clinical practice requirements of the chosen program.
  3. Pass the SANC Examination: Successfully complete the licensure examination administered by SANC.
  4. Register with SANC: Submit all necessary documentation, including proof of identity, qualifications, and a certificate of good character, along with the prescribed registration fee.
  5. Complete Mandatory Community Service: Undertake a year of community service in a public health facility as required.

Choosing the Right Nursing College

Selecting the appropriate institution is vital for your nursing career. Consider the following SANC-accredited colleges and universities:

  • Mediclinic Learning Centres: Located in Sandton, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, and Polokwane, offering Higher Certificate and Diploma programs.
  • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits): Offers a Bachelor of Nursing degree.
  • University of Johannesburg (UJ): Provides a Bachelor of Nursing program.
  • Tshwane University of Technology (TUT): Offers a National Diploma in Nursing.
  • University of Cape Town (UCT): Provides a Bachelor of Nursing degree.
  • University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN): Offers a Bachelor of Nursing program.
  • University of the Western Cape (UWC): Provides a Bachelor of Nursing degree.

Ensure to verify the accreditation status of any institution through the SANC website before applying.

Application Process and Tips

  • Application Period: Most institutions open applications between May and June annually.
  • Submission: Applications are typically submitted electronically via the institution’s website.
  • Preparation: Gather all necessary documents, including academic transcripts, identification, and proof of residence.
  • Financial Aid: Explore bursaries and scholarships offered by the Department of Health, private institutions, and NGOs.

Embarking on a nursing career in South Africa is a noble and rewarding endeavour. By understanding the educational pathways, meeting the necessary requirements, and choosing the right accredited institution, you can make a significant impact in the healthcare sector. Stay informed, dedicated, and compassionate, and you’ll find success in this vital profession.
