The eagerly awaited Telkom Netball League (TNL) clash between the Gauteng Jaguars and Zambezi Eagles, scheduled for Tuesday, 29 April 2025, was abruptly cancelled, with Netball South Africa (NSA) offering no initial explanation for the decision.
Cloud of Uncertainty Before the Fixture
Uncertainty loomed over the match from the outset, following a formal grievance lodged by the Jaguars against NSA regarding substandard accommodation arrangements at Sun City, where the tournament is being hosted. Since the tournament kicked off on Saturday, the team has been grappling with unstable and inconsistent lodging conditions.
Gauteng Jaguars Stranded Players and Poor Planning
According to SABC Sport, the Jaguars were left in limbo upon arrival as they were not officially booked into the designated accommodation. For three consecutive days, players were shuffled between temporary rooms, hindering both their rest and match-day preparation.
Matters worsened on Tuesday morning when, after completing their first match of the day against the Baby Proteas at 09:00, the team returned only to discover that they had been checked out of their rooms. With nowhere to go, the players were left stranded for hours, making it impossible to properly prepare for their evening fixture against the Zambezi Eagles. The match was eventually called off.
NSA Responds and Reschedules
Netball South Africa has since acknowledged the disruption, confirming that the Jaguars’ complaints about accommodation logistics were valid. In a public statement, NSA confirmed that the match was postponed due to these issues and has been rescheduled for Saturday, 3 May, at 09:00.
“We are aware of the concerns raised by the Gauteng Jaguars and can confirm that the situation surrounding their accommodation has been resolved in coordination with Sun City,” the NSA statement read. “We apologise to the team and all stakeholders affected by the cancellation.”
Leadership Crisis Within NSA
This controversy surfaces amid a larger storm brewing within Netball South Africa. Its president, Cecilia Molokwane, was placed on temporary suspension last week pending the outcome of an internal disciplinary hearing into corruption allegations. The suspension, confirmed by World Netball, has further fuelled scrutiny on NSA’s governance and operational integrity.

Molokwane’s case has heightened tensions between NSA and the parliamentary portfolio committee on sport, arts, and culture, who recently held a tense meeting over concerns around transparency and accountability in the sport’s administration. With national netball at a critical crossroads, these recent events have only added to the growing list of challenges facing the federation.

The Jaguars’ ordeal has sparked widespread concern, especially considering their professional status and role in elevating netball standards across the country. With the fixture now moved to the weekend, the team will be hoping for stability — both off and on the court — as they continue their Telkom Netball League campaign.
