Tembisa Hospital: A Growing Concern

A fire that broke out in Tembisa Hospital, Gauteng, in April 2025 raised serious concerns about the safety and security of healthcare facilities. The fire, which began in the Accident and Emergencies Unit, damaged critical medical equipment and infrastructure. The fire was fortunately not fatal, but it had a profound impact on both the staff and the patients.

The Gauteng Legislature Oversight Committee responded by launching an investigation in order to assess the damages and evaluate the recovery of the hospital. This incident highlights the challenges that the healthcare system in the province faces. It also highlights the urgent need to improve safety protocols and prevent fires.

Here are details of the Tembisa Hospital Fire, the role of the Gauteng Legislature to investigate the damage and the steps that must be taken in order to prevent future incidents.

Tembisa Hospital Fire Timeline of Events

A fire broke out at the Accident and Emergency Unit of Tembisa Hospital on April 20th, 2025. The fire spread quickly, causing extensive damage to the building as well as high-tech medical devices. The emergency services were quick to respond, and the hospital staff moved patients to other facilities nearby. The fire did not result in any deaths.

The fire severely damaged the critical areas of the hospital despite the quick action taken by emergency services. The equipment used to provide vital healthcare services such as lifesaving machines, was destroyed. This incident brought to light the vulnerability of public health infrastructures, which are often underfunded and unprepared for emergencies such as fires.

The problems didn’t end there. Just days after the first fire, on April 22, 2025, a second fire broke out in the outpatient department of the hospital. This fire, although quickly contained, added to the strain on an already overburdened hospital. The second incident also did not result in any injuries.

Gauteng Legislature investigates Tembisa Hospital fire damage

The Gauteng Legislature’s Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee visited Tembisa Hospital to conduct an inspection on April 22, 2025. The committee’s primary goal was to evaluate the recovery efforts and assess the extent of damage.

Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko, MEC for Gauteng Health, assured the public during their visit that the government was working to restore damaged areas and replace lost equipment. She acknowledged that the fires had caused emotional distress to both the staff and the patients. She stressed the commitment of the government to restore the facility.

We understand the distress this incident has caused staff, patients and their families. We will repair the damaged unit. “We will continue to care for our patients and will communicate openly and honestly while we recover,” stated MEC Nkomo Ralehoko.

The Gauteng Legislature’s investigation will be crucial in determining if adequate safety protocols are in place and what can be done to prevent future accidents.

Fire Safety in Gauteng’s Healthcare System

The Tembisa Hospital Fire is not an isolated event. The Tembisa fire is a reflection of the problems that plague the healthcare infrastructure in Gauteng. According to the Democratic Alliance, several hospitals in Gauteng do not have the necessary fire safety systems such as alarms, fire extinguishers and escape lighting. This makes them vulnerable to similar accidents.

The rapid population growth in Gauteng has put increasing pressure on the public healthcare system. Hospitals are under pressure to maintain their infrastructure as more people seek care. Many facilities are at risk due to a lack of investment in fire-safety measures.

The DA has spoken out against the provincial government for failing to prioritise fire safety in hospitals. Jack Bloom, the DA’s Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, expressed concern about the provincial government’s neglect of basic safety. He noted that Tembisa Hospital has been criticized for years due to concerns over mismanagement and the lack of a permanent chief executive officer.

“Unfortunately, there has been a long history of delayed investigations and lackluster consequences following previous hospital fires. Tembisa hospital has been mismanaged by shady contracts and looted for years, but it doesn’t even have a permanent chief executive officer,” Bloom said.

The Political and Union Reaction to Hospital Fires

Both political leaders and unions have responded to the recurrent incidents of hospital fires. Cosatu Gauteng has expressed serious concerns about the safety of healthcare staff and patients. The union called for an extensive review of the fire safety standards in all public hospitals across the province.

Amos Monyela is the Cosatu Gauteng chair and he has highlighted the importance of creating safe environments for patients as well as workers in hospitals. He stressed that the repeated fire incidents not only harm healthcare delivery but also expose vulnerable people to additional risks.

Hospitals provide medical care to the injured and sick, so it’s important that they are safe. “The recurring fires in health facilities are a concern to both the workers at the facility and the citizens of Gauteng,” Monyela stated.

The union, in light of this concern, has called for immediate actions to address deficiencies in hospital infrastructure, in particular in terms of emergency preparedness and fire safety.

Impact on Tembisa Hospital Operations

Despite the significant damage caused by the fires, Tembisa Hospital managed to provide essential services. The hospital is still able to provide emergency care, obstetrics and pediatric services, although at a reduced capacity. The hospital’s capacity to perform specialized procedures was severely hindered by the loss and destruction of vital areas.

The hospital management has been working tirelessly to ensure patients receive care throughout this difficult period. The damage to the vital equipment will make it difficult to restore full functionality.

We are working closely together with the Gauteng Department of Health and other emergency responders in order to recover as quickly as possible from this incident. It will take some time to replace damaged equipment and refurbish affected areas of the hospital, the management said in an official statement.

Gauteng’s healthcare system: Broader Implications

The fires that broke out at Tembisa Hospital raised serious questions about the health infrastructure of Gauteng. Public hospitals are increasingly struggling to provide medical services due to the shortage of resources and the increasing demand.

Investigating the causes of the fires by the Gauteng Legislature will be crucial in addressing these issues. The investigation could reveal systemic failings that would lead to more reforms of how healthcare facilities are funded and managed. The safety and quality of care at hospitals across the province could be improved.

The fire has also led to a broader discussion about the funding of public healthcare in Gauteng. The pressure on healthcare facilities increases as the province grows. Hospitals will continue to be at risk if they do not invest in adequate infrastructure, such as fire safety.

Fire Safety Reforms in Healthcare Facilities: A Wake-Up Call

Fires that have repeatedly occurred in Gauteng public hospitals, such as the Tembisa Hospital, have highlighted the urgent need to reform fire safety standards. The province has many hospitals that are not in compliance with the basic fire safety standards, increasing the risk of future incidents.

Gauteng’s legislative investigation will be crucial in pushing for more stringent fire safety protocols in public hospitals and better management practices. There is no doubt that more must be done to equip hospitals to deal with emergencies and to provide a safe working environment for healthcare workers and patients.

The Government and Political Will to Address the Root Causes

The role of the Gauteng Provincial Government will be scrutinized as the investigation proceeds. The DA and Cosatu both called for greater accountability and immediate actions to address the underlying problems in hospital management and safety.

The Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, is yet to issue a statement, but his response will have a major impact on the future of the healthcare infrastructure in this province.

Rebuilding Tembisa hospital and improving Gauteng’s healthcare system

The Tembisa hospital fire is a stark example of the challenges that Gauteng’s health care system faces. The ongoing investigation of the Gauteng Legislature is crucial in determining the best way to equip the province’s hospitals in order to prevent future incidents.

The incident at Tembisa Hospital provides a unique opportunity for government officials and other stakeholders to tackle systemic issues such as fire safety and infrastructure maintenance. We can only ensure the safety of hospitals and their ability to provide essential care by making a concerted attempt to improve healthcare facilities in the province.
