There’s a fresh energy sweeping through local athletics as the ASA Championships kick off in Potchefstroom this week. With several seasoned stars stepping aside to focus on international commitments, a new generation of athletes is preparing to grab the spotlight and potentially usher in a changing of the guard on the national stage.
Simbine’s Absence Opens the Door
One of the most notable absences is that of South Africa’s 100m record holder Akani Simbine, who has opted to focus on the early stages of the international season. His withdrawal from the sprint events paves the way for a group of exciting young talents to step up and make their mark.
Men’s Sprints Set for a Shake-Up
In the men’s sprints, eyes will be on a dynamic mix of youthful contenders. Teenagers Bayanda Walaza and Karabo Letebele, alongside 20-year-old speedsters Bradley Nkoana and Abduraghmaan Karriem, are looking to prove themselves. They’ll be joined by 21-year-old Benji Richardson, who is expected to be in the mix as they go up against seasoned campaigners such as Wayde van Niekerk (32), Sinesipho Dambile (23), and 25-year-olds Tsebo Matsoso and Retshidisitswe Mlenga.
Women’s Sprint Battle Intensifies
On the women’s side, the short sprints promise fireworks. Defending champion Viwe Jingqi (20) could be under real pressure from up-and-coming 17-year-old Hannah Hope Vermaak, who recently edged Jingqi at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix. Their rematch on home soil could be one of the highlights of the meet.
Young Contenders Eye 400m Glory
In the men’s 400m, with current champion Lythe Pillay also away in China for the Diamond League, there’s an opening for young blood to rise. All eyes will be on 19-year-old world junior champion Udeme Okon as he prepares for a tough duel with experienced athlete Zakithi Nene (27). Adding to the intrigue is 17-year-old Leendert Koekemoer, who is back in top form after an injury layoff and could be a dark horse in the one-lap race.
Teen Talent in the Hurdles Spotlight
The 400m hurdles will also showcase young talent with serious potential. At just 17, Njabulo Mbatha is already considered a favourite for the men’s title. In the women’s race, teenage standout Tumi Ramokgopa will be battling it out with Olympic semifinalists Zeney Geldenhuys and Rogail Joseph, both 24, as well as 20-year-old Hannah van Niekerk.
Ramokgopa Leads the Charge in 100m Hurdles
Ramokgopa isn’t stopping there—she’s also competing in the 100m hurdles, where she’ll be the frontrunner in the absence of record holder Marione Fourie. Having recently broken the national junior record, she enters the event with confidence and momentum.
ASA Championships: A New Era Begins in Potchefstroom
The ASA Championships will run from Thursday to Sunday at the Puk McArthur Athletics Stadium. As the country’s top youth prospects prepare to take centre stage, this could be the week that new household names begin to emerge in South African athletics.
