South African airports may soon allow seamless international travel with new digital travel credentials that replace traditional passports and boarding passes.
Goodbye Passports and Boarding Passes
The days of fumbling for your passport and boarding pass at airport checkpoints may soon be behind us—especially in South Africa. The country is on track to embrace a global aviation shift that could eliminate physical travel documents altogether, thanks to the rollout of Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs).
A New Era of Seamless Travel
Under a bold proposal by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), traditional travel documents could be replaced with a secure digital identity stored on smartphones. This cutting-edge system uses facial recognition technology to verify identities throughout a traveller’s airport journey—from check-in to final arrival—without ever needing to present a passport or boarding pass.
According to the ICAO, this tech-forward move is expected to drastically speed up airport processing, reduce fraudulent activities, and enhance the overall travel experience across the globe.
The Role of South Africa in the Global Rollout
South Africa is among the countries poised to adopt this innovation. Speaking to radio station 702, Andy Smith, Director of Industry and Innovation at Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques (SITA)—a major player in the DTC’s development—confirmed the country’s involvement in preparing for this seamless future.
“We’re getting to the point where travellers can move across borders without having to present either their passport or boarding pass multiple times,” said Smith.
How It Works
The Digital Travel Credential will live securely on your smartphone, equipped with facial-recognition capabilities. Travellers can verify their identities and complete required documentation before even setting foot in the airport. All verifications, including travel authorisations and visas, are handled digitally in advance.
“This creates a more relaxed and efficient process,” said Smith. “You’ll know everything is sorted before you even leave home.”
Voluntary and Secure
Importantly, the DTC system will be voluntary and compatible only with modern smartphones. It adheres to international standards, ensuring governments across the world can confidently trust the technology.
Once implemented, travellers will be able to:
- Digitally store and verify a passport replica
- Complete check-in, security clearance, and border controls digitally
- Experience stress-free arrivals in foreign destinations
A Look Into the Future of Travel
This transformation is not just about technology—it’s about creating a smoother journey for travellers. As South Africa leans into this global innovation, frequent fliers and tech-savvy adventurers can expect a revolution in how they experience air travel.
From avoiding long queues to cutting back on paperwork and presenting documents repeatedly, the Digital Travel Credential marks a monumental step toward a frictionless, paperless, and more secure future in aviation.
