Orlando Pirates are preparing for life after Jose Riveiro, and the search for his successor is already well underway. The Spaniard is set to leave the Buccaneers at the end of the season, wrapping up a successful three-year spell in which he delivered silverware and kept the team competitive on all fronts.
Speculation Heats Up Over New Coach
Following the announcement of Riveiro’s exit, numerous names have been floated as potential replacements. Among the most prominent was Pitso Mosimane, a veteran of South African football and a highly respected coach on the continent. For a time, Mosimane appeared to be the leading choice to take over the reins.
Rulani Mokwena Now the Leading Candidate
However, the situation has evolved. According to reports from Phakaaathi, Rulani Mokwena is now the frontrunner for the job. Once Wydad Casablanca confirmed that Mokwena would be released at the end of the season, Pirates shifted their focus to the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician.
“Yes, it’s true that Pitso’s name had come up in the management meetings and was the leading candidate to replace Riveiro, but that changed since Wydad announced that they will release Mokwena. He is now the leading candidate,” a source told the publication.
Tough Season Abroad for Mokwena
Mokwena’s stint with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club has been anything but smooth. Since joining at the start of the current campaign, he has struggled to achieve success, with the club failing to secure any silverware. Wydad are currently third in the Botola Pro League, trailing leaders RS Berkane by 16 points.
Familiar Territory Beckons
Should he return, Mokwena would be stepping into a familiar environment. He previously held coaching roles at Pirates and is well-acquainted with the culture and expectations of the club. His tactical acumen and understanding of local football could make him a strong successor to Riveiro.
Mbele Also Poised for a Comeback?
In another potential shake-up, former Pirates administrator Floyd Mbele could also be on his way back to the club. Mbele, who left the Buccaneers in 2023, recently parted ways with Sekhukhune United.
Following the passing of Screamer Tshabalala, internal operations at Pirates have reportedly been challenging, with Mpumi Khoza said to be struggling to manage alone. Reports suggest that Khoza has recommended Mbele’s return to help stabilise the club’s administration.
A New Era for Orlando Pirates?
With Riveiro’s exit confirmed and changes brewing behind the scenes, Orlando Pirates appear poised for a major shift. Whether Mokwena officially takes over the helm remains to be seen, but all signs point to his return. The coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the future of one of the country’s most historic football clubs.
