South Africa’s political landscape is heating up after ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula made headlines for asserting the ANC’s leadership role in the Government of National Unity (GNU). His bold message to the Democratic Alliance (DA)? If they want the country to function, they need to cooperate.
Speaking in early April 2025, Mbalula said :
“We are leading this government… if the DA wants South Africa to function, they’ll come to the party.”
This comes as tensions flare over the DA’s recent decision to oppose the ANC-led budget framework—a move that forced the ruling party to seek support from smaller coalition partners.
The Fragile Balance of Power in the GNU
The GNU was formed after South Africa’s 2024 general elections left the ANC without a clear majority. The ANC secured around 40% of the vote, prompting the formation of a broad coalition that includes the DA and several smaller parties. But working together hasn’t been smooth sailing.
The DA’s vote against the budget exposed cracks in the coalition, triggering a stern response from ANC leadership. Mbalula’s comments reinforced the ANC’s belief that it must lead decisively despite the coalition model.
DA leaders didn’t take the remarks lightly. Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson responded.
“The foghorns that exist within the ANC need to turn down the volume. No party can say it’s my way or the highway.”
Siviwe Gwarube, DA’s Minister of Basic Education, also weighed in:
“If the DA withdraws, the ANC must account to South Africans for ruining the country’s best chance of recovery.”
These comments suggest a growing frustration within the DA as they push back against what they see as ANC dominance.
Who’s Really in Charge?
Mbalula stressed that all Cabinet members, including those from the DA, report to President Cyril Ramaphosa. His message: while the GNU is a collaborative effort, the ANC is steering the ship.
“The GNU by design is complex. It requires high levels of maturity and constant consultation… However, there must be one direction,” Mbalula noted on his Facebook page.
This statement underscores the ANC’s view that unity in direction is essential for effective governance, especially in a time of economic uncertainty and political transition.
Can the Coalition Hold Together?
Despite the budget clash, there are signs of progress. DA leader John Steenhuisen recently said the relationship between the ANC and DA has improved:
“The relationship is in a better place than it was last week, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy from here.”
While not exactly a ringing endorsement, it shows a willingness to continue dialogue. Political observers suggest both parties recognise the high stakes. The coalition offers a unique chance to stabilise South Africa’s economy and rebuild trust in government institutions.
Business leaders and investors are watching closely. Political stability is key to maintaining market confidence and attracting investment. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange has shown cautious optimism, but lingering tensions within the GNU could derail progress if not carefully managed.
Unity or Unravelling?
Mbalula’s strong words reflect the ANC’s determination to lead the GNU with a clear vision. But as the DA continues to assert its role, the coalition’s future depends on mutual respect, compromise, and shared purpose.
The coming months will be crucial. Will the parties rally together for the good of South Africa, or will internal friction pull them apart?
