The Olivedale Substation forms a vital part of the local grid, supplying electricity to a variety of residential and commercial areas. City Power confirmed that the substation will undergo maintenance to improve reliability and reduce the likelihood of future outages.

This planned work will ensure that service is delivered better across Johannesburg.

City Power’s announcement of 3 April 2025 stated that “This is part our ongoing programme to maintain safe and reliable electricity for our community.”

What areas will be affected?

  • Bryanston Ext. 3
  • Ferndale
  • Johannesburg-North
  • Jukskei Park
  • Meadowhurst
  • Olivedale Ext. 2
  • Olivedale Ext. 21
  • Olivedale Ext. 3
  • Olivedale Ext. 6

It’s best to prepare in advance if your home or office is in one of these zones. This will help reduce the impact a power outage may have.

Prepare for a Power Outage

City Power has warned that the supply could be restored sooner than anticipated, even though it is scheduled to last from 09h00-17h00. should always treat electrical outlets, appliances and other devices as if they were live.

Stay prepared with these helpful tips:

  • Charge all essential devices the night before (phones and laptops as well as power banks).
  • Close the refrigerator and freezer doors when not using them to preserve food.
  • Avoid fire hazards by using rechargeable flashlights or lights in place of candles.
  • Unplug electronics that are sensitive in order to avoid damage caused by power surges.
  • Check for elderly or vulnerable neighbors, who may depend on electrical equipment.
  • Companies should evaluate their operational needs and look at backup power solutions when possible.

Understanding the Bigger Picture

The growing population of Johannesburg and the energy demand it generates make regular upgrades to infrastructure necessary. Planned upkeep is managed by local distributors like City Power.

These measures will reduce the likelihood of unanticipated faults and increase the life expectancy of the electrical infrastructure. This is beneficial to both households and businesses.

What you can do to move forward

Here are some long-term options to consider if you live in a region that is frequently affected by unplanned or maintenance outages.

  • Invest in battery backup systems or solar energy.
  • Protect electronic devices with surge protection.
  • Subscribe to City Power text alerts or local community WhatsApp groups.
  • Keep informed with local media such as Gauteng News.

Stay informed and prepared

It may be a nuisance, but the upcoming eight-hour power outage that will affect parts of Johannesburg is a necessary step towards building a more resilient and stronger energy network. City Power is committed to improving service at the Olivedale Substation. Your preparation will make a huge difference in your day.

Plan ahead and alert your family, friends, or neighbours.
