South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries are urged to take note of the official SASSA Grant Payment Dates for May 2025, as well as important updates impacting payments and grant card renewals. With millions relying on monthly financial assistance, staying informed ensures smoother access to funds and avoids potential disruptions.
Confirmed SASSA Grant Payment Dates for May 2025
SASSA has confirmed the social grant payment dates for May 2025. Payments will be disbursed as follows:

New Grant Amounts Effective April 2025
To help beneficiaries cope with inflation and rising costs, the Treasury implemented increases across all social grants in April 2025:
- Old Age Grant: R2185 → R2315
- War Veterans Grant: R2205 → R2335
- Disability Grant: R2185 → R2315
- Foster Care Grant: R1180 → R1250
- Care Dependency Grant: R2185 → R2315
- Child Support Grant: R530 → R560
- Grant-in-Aid: R530 → R560
These adjustments were announced in the 2025 Budget Speech and aim to offer some relief in light of the rising cost of basic goods and services.
Important Update: SASSA Gold Card Expiry and Replacement
SASSA beneficiaries who are still using the older gold SASSA/Postbank cards are required to switch to the new black Postbank SASSA cards by 31 May 2025. Initially, the deadline was set for March, but it has since been extended to accommodate more beneficiaries.
Failure to replace the card may lead to non-payment of grants. Postbank branches and participating retailers such as Shoprite and Pick n Pay are facilitating the transition.
“Do not wait until May to switch your card. Delays risk payment interruptions for millions. Use the remaining time to withdraw or transfer funds from your gold card to avoid losing access,” said Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA national spokesperson.

How to Ensure a Smooth Grant Payment Process
To avoid missed payments or delays, SASSA encourages grant recipients to:
1. Confirm Banking Details
If you’ve opted to receive payments into your personal bank account, ensure your banking details are correct and up to date with SASSA.
2. Avoid the Rush
Grant recipients are reminded that they do not need to collect their grant on the exact payment date. Funds remain available for withdrawal even after the scheduled disbursement day. Planning ahead can help avoid long queues and overcrowding.
3. Use Approved Channels
Grants can be collected at ATMs, participating retail stores (Shoprite, Boxer, Pick n Pay, etc.), and selected Postbank branches. Make sure your chosen channel supports your new SASSA card.
Who Qualifies for SASSA Grants?
There are eight types of grants provided by SASSA, each with specific eligibility criteria:
- Older Persons Grant
- Disability Grant
- War Veterans Grant
- Child Support Grant
- Foster Child Grant
- Care Dependency Grant
- Social Relief of Distress (SRD)
- Grant-in-Aid
If you’re unsure of your eligibility or want to apply, visit the SASSA services portal or consult your nearest SASSA office.
The confirmed SASSA Grant Payment Dates for May 2025 offer some stability for the millions of South Africans who rely on this support. However, the looming gold card replacement deadline is a key concern that must be addressed urgently to avoid disruptions.
SASSA continues to encourage beneficiaries to update their cards, confirm banking details, and use official channels to stay informed.
