Mahindra has achieved a major breakthrough in the South African automotive market, driven by the success of its rugged and reliable Mahindra Pik Up. In a record-setting March, the Indian automaker sold 2,253 vehicles, smashing through the 2,000-unit monthly barrier for the first time in its history. This landmark performance firmly cements Mahindra’s growing presence in the highly competitive bakkie and SUV market.
At the heart of this success is the Mahindra Pik Up, which has surged ahead of traditional rivals like the Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton, while also outperforming China’s leading contender, the GWM P-Series. The Pik Up is now leading Mahindra’s charge into the top tier of local bakkie brands, closing in on the long-established giants—Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max.

March Breaks Every Record for Mahindra
Mahindra’s March sales performance marks a nearly 40% jump from the previous record of 1,613 units set just a month earlier in February. This growth has vaulted the brand into the eighth-largest vehicle manufacturer in South Africa, a notable climb just two months after entering the top 10.
March was a month of broken records for Mahindra:
Total sales: 2,253 units
Bakkie sales: 1,256 units (highest ever)
SUV sales: 1,000 units (new record)
Scorpio-N sales: 145 units (highest monthly total)
These figures reflect not just growing popularity, but sustained momentum that has made Mahindra the fastest-growing high-volume vehicle brand (500+ units per month) for the 2024-2025 financial year—an achievement it also earned in 2018 and 2022.

Individual Buyers Drive the Surge
What makes this achievement even more impressive is the source of these sales. According to Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, the majority of purchases were made by individual customers, rather than large fleet buyers—a strong indicator of the brand’s growing credibility and appeal in the retail market.
“We are more than thrilled about our sales performance over the past 12 months, but especially by the underlying story told by these numbers,” Gupta said. “The overwhelming majority of sales in the past month and past year were made to individuals. This is a true reflection of the health of the Mahindra brand.”

Local Investment Signals Long-Term Commitment
To support this growth, Mahindra is investing significantly in its local operations. The brand recently broke ground on a new manufacturing facility at the Dube Tradeport in Durban, which will eventually replace its current plant and boast a production capacity exceeding 1,000 units per month.
In addition, Mahindra has opened a new parts distribution centre and training facility in Midrand, which more than doubles its storage and logistics capabilities. This facility will also house the brand’s training centre and special fitment division, enhancing service delivery and dealer support.
With a winning combination of robust product offerings, loyal individual buyers, and aggressive local investment, Mahindra is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in South Africa’s competitive automotive landscape—led confidently by the formidable Pik Up.
