Another Major Capitec App Outage Leaves Thousands of Customers Locked Out
Users Left Frustrated by Latest App Outage
Capitec is down, again: In yet another frustrating episode for digital banking users, Capitec Bank’s mobile app has gone down once again, affecting thousands of customers who rely on the platform for everyday transactions.
The issue was first reported around 12:00 PM on Friday, 4 April 2025, according to data sourced from DownDetector.co.za, with over 1,400 users flagging problems accessing their accounts. The outage quickly became a trending topic across social media platforms including X, Facebook, and Reddit.

“Our team is aware of the situation and working hard to resolve it as quickly as possible,” Capitec confirmed on X. “Thank you for your patience, we should be up and running soon!”
Despite being the most-used digital bank in South Africa with over 23 million customers, Capitec has experienced recurring annual outages, raising growing concerns about the bank’s IT infrastructure.
A Pattern of Disruption
This is far from Capitec’s first brush with digital chaos. The bank experienced a huge global outage in July 2024, tied to the CrowdStrike global IT failure, which disrupted all its channels—including the app, internet banking, and USSD services.

Going further back, Capitec’s most severe outage occurred in August 2022, when all digital banking services were down for over 40 hours, leaving customers stranded and furious.
Many loyal clients are now asking: How many more times will this happen?
What You Can Do
While Capitec rushes to fix the issue, users are advised to:
- Try USSD banking (*120*3279#) for basic transactions (if it’s operational),
- Visit physical branches if necessary,
- Follow Capitec on X or Facebook for real-time updates.
Bottom Line:
As South Africans grow increasingly reliant on mobile banking, repeated outages like this one could damage trust, no matter how convenient the bank’s app usually is. Capitec must now prove it can offer not just affordable banking, but reliable access too.
