The Gauteng Investment Conference held in April 2025 marked a pivotal moment in the province’s economic journey. MEC Lebogang Maile’s address at the event offered valuable insights into Gauteng’s plans to accelerate its growth, attract global investment, and become a leading economic player in Africa. As the province aims to position itself as a key destination for investment, tourism, and innovation, Maile’s speech highlighted the strategies and opportunities that will drive Gauteng’s economic development in 2025 and beyond.

Gauteng’s Growing Role in South Africa and Africa

In his address, MEC Lebogang Maile underscored Gauteng’s central role in South Africa’s economy. As the province contributing more than 33% to the national GDP, Gauteng holds a prominent position not just within South Africa but across the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The province is also a major player in Africa’s economy, contributing around 7% to the continent’s GDP.

With its strategic location, Gauteng is poised to become an even more significant economic hub. The MEC Lebogang Maile highlighted the province’s participation in the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, where Gauteng was recognised as a key player in addressing global challenges, promoting inclusive growth, and transitioning to a sustainable energy future.

Key Sectors for Investment in Gauteng

MEC Lebogang Maile’s speech focused on sector-specific investment plans, which are crucial to Gauteng’s economic strategy. These plans aim to align the province’s growth with its broader regional and global goals, driving both innovation and industrialisation. Below are some of the most promising sectors in Gauteng:

1. Manufacturing: Re-industrialisation and Technological Growth

Gauteng is focused on revitalising its manufacturing sector, which plays a key role in the province’s economic strategy. This includes both traditional manufacturing (such as textiles and furniture) and more advanced sectors like aerospace, automotive, and chemicals.

The goal is to drive re-industrialisation by increasing productivity, adopting cutting-edge technology, and supporting small businesses. The province is investing in training and skills development to ensure that the workforce is equipped for the digital age.

2. Construction: Modernising Infrastructure for Growth

Infrastructure development is a cornerstone of Gauteng’s economic plan. The construction sector is set to benefit from significant investments aimed at modernising capabilities and boosting infrastructure. The province is prioritising projects that will help facilitate economic growth and create jobs in the process.

3. Information and Communication Technology (ICT): A Digital Future

As one of the most important sectors for future growth, ICT is a focus area for Gauteng. The province is positioning itself as a leading destination for Global Business Services (GBS) and digital transformation.

Investment in innovation hubs and skills training is a priority. The province aims to boost its tech industry, driving economic growth through digital solutions and positioning Gauteng as a technology leader.

4. Green Economy: Promoting Sustainability and Renewable Energy

Sustainability is a key part of Gauteng’s future plans. The green economy focuses on reducing environmental impacts through investment in renewable energy and resource efficiency. By attracting investment in these areas, Gauteng aims to foster sustainable growth, helping to tackle climate change while creating green jobs.

5. Finance and Transport: Strengthening Key Economic Sectors

In addition to these sectors, the finance and transport industries are crucial for Gauteng’s development. The province is working to improve access to funding for businesses, enabling them to scale up and grow. At the same time, Gauteng’s transport infrastructure is being modernised to support logistics, e-commerce, and regional connectivity.

Fostering Inclusive Economic Growth

A significant part of MEC Lebogang Maile’s speech was dedicated to inclusive economic growth. Reflecting on South Africa’s apartheid history, Maile stressed that economic growth must be shared by all, particularly by those who were previously excluded.

To address this, the Township Industrial Parks Programme aims to bring previously marginalised communities into the economic fold, empowering individuals and small businesses to thrive. By providing support to SMMEs (small, medium, and micro enterprises), Gauteng is working to foster a more inclusive economy, with a special focus on empowering women and youth.

Since 2020, more than 1,200 SMMEs have benefited from support initiatives, and nearly 40% of these businesses are led by women, while 33% are led by youth. These efforts are a testament to Gauteng’s commitment to driving economic transformation.

Public-Private Partnerships: Catalysing Growth

The Gauteng Investment Conference provided a platform for both local and international investors to engage with the provincial government. Maile highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in driving economic growth.

At the Gauteng Investment Conference, more than 300 investors committed over R312.5 billion in investment pledges, surpassing the province’s initial target of R300 billion. These pledges are spread across sectors like infrastructure, manufacturing, ICT, and energy, demonstrating the confidence investors have in Gauteng’s growth potential.

By working closely with the private sector, the provincial government is positioning Gauteng as an investment destination with high returns and long-term sustainability.

Gauteng’s Five Development Corridors: Key Growth Areas

To realise its vision for 2025 and beyond, Gauteng is focused on five development corridors. Each corridor is centred on a specific sector and geographic area, with targeted projects designed to accelerate growth and create jobs. Here’s a quick look at each corridor:

1. Northern Corridor: Automotive and Innovation

The Northern Corridor is home to significant projects in automotive and innovation. The Tshwane Automotive City is a major development aimed at creating a hub for the automotive industry, supported by transport and logistics infrastructure.

2. Central Corridor: Johannesburg’s Financial and Tech Hub

The Central Corridor, which includes Johannesburg, focuses on turning the city into a leading financial and technology hub. One of the flagship projects is the development of a Smart City in the Lanseria node, aimed at creating a modern, connected urban environment that promotes business and residential growth.

3. Eastern Corridor: Aerospace and Medical Manufacturing

The Eastern Corridor focuses on aerospace, manufacturing, and logistics. OR Tambo International Airport, Africa’s busiest airport, anchors this corridor’s growth. The development of a medical manufacturing cluster and the Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct will also contribute to Gauteng’s economic diversification.

4. Southern Corridor: Agriculture and Renewable Energy

The Southern Corridor, anchored by the Vaal Special Economic Zone, aims to unlock the agricultural potential of the Sedibeng region while promoting renewable energy. This corridor’s projects are set to drive local economic growth and support sustainable farming practices.

5. Western Corridor: Mining, Tourism, and Agro-processing

The Western Corridor is focused on mining, tourism, and agro-processing. The Farm 2 Fork initiative is a key project in this corridor, designed to help small farmers gain access to digital technologies and improve food security across the region.

Looking Ahead: A Promising Future for Gauteng

MEC Lebogang Maile concluded his address by reaffirming Gauteng’s commitment to inclusive economic growth and sustainable development. The R312.5 billion in investment pledges secured at the conference reflects both local and international confidence in Gauteng’s vision for the future.

As the province continues to attract investment and implement its growth strategies, Gauteng is set to become an even more prominent economic player in Africa and globally. For investors, businesses, and communities, the future looks bright.

Get Involved: Investment Opportunities in Gauteng

If you’re looking to be part of Gauteng’s exciting growth story, now is the time to get involved. The province is ripe with investment opportunities, and with initiatives like the Gauteng Investment Conference, it’s clear that Gauteng is positioning itself as a top investment destination.
